Birthday Present

Yes indeed, I always get a few presents, after all it is calving season, and we ARE in the middle of it. But this is one of the best ones ever.

As you can see there is 2 of them. The oldest is the red one (red brf in fact) and the younger is solid black. And they are BOTH girls. Born about 2 hours apart. We pulled the second one, but with bare hands. I'm sure she would have had it shortly, but rather have a healthy one we pulled, than a weak one we didn't..... I like twins

Congrats!

Great looking calves! It is amazing that a cow can carry that much of a "load" and successfully raise them. Quite an accomplishment. So, do you only have to worry about a "free martin" when the twin heifer is born with a bull calf?

They are a good pair. She is sure in good condition even now, with all that on the ground. She won't be raising both of them. One of them will either be adopted onto another cow (if we lose a calf) or onto the milk cow once she calves. The plan is to keep them if they turn out this fall.

And yes, the only time you get a freemartin is if you have a heifer/bull set. It can happen to a single calf too, if she happened to be a twin and the bull calf died and was resorbed....
