Whiteface-holstein or Jersey-holstein ????

Hello,
Ok a little waile back i asked what kind would be better for my mom. Well she has came across 2 babys that she likes. They will both be dehorned, there the same age, one is a whiteface ( beef) x holstein and the other is a jerseyx holstein. Woundered which would be a better family cow. Which would produce the best for the family ( i know there are many things that can come in to play with how much they will produce). Which might make a good type to start with. thank you

too bad you dont have the option of beef/jersey

both of the choices will probably be larger than what i personally would want.

i have a jersey holstein and her legs are too big for the jersey size kickers

The Jesey/Holstein would be better if you're looking at milking.
The Beefer/Holstein would eat you out of house and home and less milk.

We had a Jersey Holstein when I was a kid that milked like crazy and was 2/3 the size of the Holsteins.
I have one now that will (hopefully) be bred in June. She looks pretty good and I have high hopes for her in our system.

The jersey/holstein definetly better for a family cow if you are more interested in milk over meat. The beef/holstein if you're interested in a good fatten out baby latter on. If you breed your beef/holstein to a beef bull, you'd get a 3/4 beef calf that's on a heavy milking mom. Thus, growing a calf out pretty well. I've got two angus/holstein crosses and two jersey/holstein crosses. The angus/holsteins are HUGE cows. (and like an above post they "eat you out of house and home") They are however raising two calves a piece. It all depends on what you want. I'm partial to any milk cow that's got jersey in it.

Ok well she likes the jersey X more, so this info will make her happy,,lol I guess i was just worried with having too much milk to work with. But i've also been told that the amount that you feed has alot to do with how much they produce.

I milk both a Whiteface(Hereford)/Friesian cross and a Jersey/Friesian cross. Both produce a similar amount of milk, both are quite large cows and both are very placid and easy to handle.

I use an Angus bull over my cows and this is where the Hereford/Friesian has it over the Jersey/Friesian. Her calves have a low birthweight but they grow like Topsy. That is of use to me as I grow my calves through to finishing but I doubt your mother is interested in that, in which case either calf will give her a good milk producing cow.

Cheers,
Ronnie
