Overweight Heifer

My heifer is overweight which is causing fertility problems. I do not grain her. I only feed her grass hay. I believe the excessive weight issue began in the spring and summer when she was on pasture exclusively.

Any suggestions on a diet and how to accomplish it?

Is There Any Chance She Is Pregnant, Not Just Fat? Has She Been Exposed?

She went into heat on Thursday. She was mounting another heifer and had a long clear mucus hanging from her vagina. If I can figure out how to post a picture I will.

I would find it real hard to believe a heifer is over weight enough to cause breeding problems that is on pasture exclusively unless you have some really good pasture.
What kind of breed/weight/age is this heifer?????????

Little Bulls Will Get A Belly On Them From Worms. The Solution To That Is Worm Med. And Feed Them More Grain. Could She Have Worms? Do You Regularly Treat Her For Internal/external Parasites? With Either Organic Methods Or Medications?

Off grass hay only and without any minerals, I can believe she may not breed. Fat from hay is not a likely cause of not getting bred. I had a 6 year old heifer that lived with and ate with goats and was a true wad of fat. She was a neighbors pasture ornament and had never been exposed to a bull. She settled the first breeding. How many lbs. of hay do you feed the heifer daily?

She is a 4 year old registered Jersey who has never been bred. She too was someone's pasture ornament. She is not a freemartin an is wormed regularly. She eats about 25 pounds of hay a day.

Do you have the cow on mineral supplements? I do not think it is a weight issue. Fat healthy females get pregnant.
