Gangrene MAstitis in 10 year old Jersey

Help????!!! My neighbors Jersey went down with mastitis. I couldn't help her(I was milking three myself) so I took the calf to bottle feed. She was going to dry her up but the next morning it turned gangrene. That was Saturday. I brought her to my barn(seperate from the others into a stall) She got 20cc pen on Saturday, 20cc on Sunday. The vet came yesterday 30 cc and into the teats some mastitis medicine. She has been down and up these past days. I have tried to nilk out the quarter, she only has one good quarter. The calf nurses on that one. She has a blind quarter that is dry. Her left side of the bag has a mastitis quarter and a gangrene quarter. Well today I cant get anything out of the gangrene quarter, so I just infused it again with two tubes of pennicillin. At least she is eating again. I am giving her fastrack tubes, molasses water and soaked beet pulp. Is there anything else I can do. She has a definite line of demarcation around the gangrene. The vet will amputate if it spreads. What about peroxide. Does it work in the udder? Any help at all. Please

Hi Tereasa..until someone can better help you..I will give you what I used on two goats here.

Miracle ll neutralizer gel..

I had some of this sitting on the shelf. I came in from milking .. fairly distraught at a goat having mastitis symptoms. Her bag was getting hard and I could hardly milk her.

I was desperate..I took that gel out and rubbed it in...I kept applying it and rubbing it in. And in a couple days..I was able to start getting milk out of her again.

She is what I would consider "wanting to be chronic"..and she is also a HUGE milker. Every since then..on that one goat..I rub her bag with that gel everytime I'm done milking her..ie..each milking.

I think it must change the ph in the bag. And with that change..I think the bacteria cannot grow.

Don't know if it will help..but like I said..I was desperate and it helped Weezie and has continued to.

I would guess just about anything that would change her bags ph would help. But I could be wrong. Good luck..

I know..I know folks..it sounds crazy.

The fact that you are not getting anything out of the quarter with gangrene is not surprising at this point. That quarter is dead and will be coming off, or at least the gangrene part will be. The best news here is that the cow is eating again. If she continues to eat, that's a good sign. We give Banamine to all cows with mastitis. With gangrene, penicillin is the drug of choice. If she survives this, time, lots of time is what she will need. It's a long road good health. We had one that lost her entire bag and lived to produce two more heifers after she healed. Certainly hope you are rewarded with a live cow for your efforts.

Pictures of udder mastitis 10 yo jersey

Vet just out again. He said she is looking better. He says he changed his mind and she may not have been gangrene or just a touch. He said that cows just don't recover after mastitis turns gangrene. She is up again so I have cleaned the stall, and milked out 1 qt of the foulest blood I've ever smelled. Then Doc P infused her teats again. Here are the pics....

This is Creme DE la creme and calf....

See the cottage cheese looking marks on her skin. Then the black(It is really purple, not black) is ringed above it. Her whole udder was cold on Saturday and looked like a bulls eye pattern with the blue and the purple rings. Today, the purple parts are cold and oozing. The skin is coming off of her udder and yellow stuff is sweating through the skin. Here is another picture

The vet says we wait and keep doing this routine. I am also rubbing her bag with coconut oil. I bought her a molasses lick to keep in her stall. Her breadth is awful. I think it is the penicillin. She pooped today and its dark green but formed. The calf's poop is still yellow, but is thick not liquid. He still is sucking on that one quarter.

Wow..Theresa..I'm a novice with milk cows..but I gotta say..as bad as her bag may look...it is no where near as black as I figured it would be.

I think whatever you and your doc are doing..is working. I also think coconut oil was a great idea to use. I think it will help pull alot of toxic crud out.

Keep up the great work..you are really doing a great job! Keep us updated.l

Crem Crem Passed away

The Jersey girl with the gangrene mastitis passed away. Her udder just kept swelling until she could not walk, so my husband put her down. Thanks for all support and kind words.

I am sorry to hear about your cow. I lost my jersey two years ago and it was awful. I know you worked so hard to keep her alive.

Are you going to have to bottle feed the calf or can you put her on another cow?
