Question Does anyone mill there own feed??

Does anyone mill there own feed for there beef/show cattle? My boys a in 4-h for the first time, and we were wondering if it would be better for us to mill the show feed rather then to buy commercial feed. We mill the feed for our ostriches but the nutritional requirement is different for cattle. I'm hoping that there is someone on the fourm that could help us out.

We mill our own grain for our cattle. We add shelled corn, 2 bails of hay, bag of drieid molasses, & mineral. The cattle love it. (Brown swiss and Herefords)

We mill our own feed for our sheep, goats and cows. Rather than ask how many pounds of corn equal 2 bales of Hay you should be asking what is the nutrient requirements for my steers/cows. Once you know what the optimum protein, fat and energy (calorie) requirements/levels are you can use the data in a book like Morrisons Feeds and Feeding to design a feed for you.

I just happen to have an extra copy of the above book I will sell to anyone who wants it for $10.00 plus shipping. Just PM me. Its an old abridged copy (as are most of them) that has a few tatered pages but all the info is the same today as when it was published.

it fluctuates with the cost of corn...corn is up here from 1.99 a bushel to over $4, so that has hurt us, since that is the main component of the mix. it was alot cheaper before, but as the other grains are cheaper at this point we can play arround with them a bit.

we have noticed a change in production with the switch from their pelleted protien to the soy, and then another increase with replacing the soy with half cottonseed meal, which was a happy accident as they didnt have enough soy to fill our order.

when i get the ticket from him i will post the proportions and the prices and the total price.

ok here it is

it was this time based on 4 bucks a bushel corn (eek)

it was apx $195 per ton

which is about 4.89 per 50# and we know whats in it, of course it was alot cheaper when corn was $1.99

3260#cracked corn @$4 bushel(@55#)
400# oats @3.90 bushel
and
250 #soymeal @$19.60 per hundred
100# liq molassass @ 20per hundred
150#cotton seed meal at $17 per hundred

right now i think i would up the oats a bit as they are cheaper than corn right now

now at $1.99 a bushel corn it was lots cheaper but this is still cheaper than bag and we know what in verses pellets.

You will get more from the corn if you have it ground finely, like corn meal.We have a Farmatic mill and 3/16 screen.
