Will help the Veal market!!!

From the Indiana Prairie Farmer:

Veal Company to Turn Calves Loose
Compiled By Staff
January 29, 2007

One of the nation's largest veal producers says it will eliminate tethering of its formula-fed veal calves. The announcement comes on the heels of Smithfield's announcement last week that it will begin moving away from the use of gestation crates for its pigs.

Marcho Farms, an integrated veal company based in Harleysville, Pa., already has thousands of calves on the new program and plans to convert its remaining farms over the next few years.

"We are confident that leading this change in production practices will help to dispel the myths associated with veal," company founder Wayne Marcho says.

The loose calves will have space to turn around, lie down and interact. Once calves are out of the starting stage and into the growing cycle, they are co-mingled in a loose-housing environment that continues to allow space for the animals.

A perfect example of why we dont need laws every time we turn around. Let the marketplace have the final word.

I suspect about 99.9% of veal consumer simply don't care about how it was raised. It is the PETA-type vegetarians who are raising the stink.

Ken, In my case you couln't be more wrong. I am as far from a "PETA- type vegatarian" as one could be. However, I strongly disagree with raising livestock in a manner that is totally alien to it's nature. Raising calves in boxes to the point that they are weakened as to be barely able to stand is cruel. That simple- cruel. I've had veal raised both ways and if there is a difference, I can't taste it. Your stance is as ignorantly reactionary as those you condemn. travlnusa makes a much more valid point "Let the marketplace have the final word."

My estimate may be high but I stand by my statement the typical consumer doesn't particularly care the conditions under which their food was raised.

Go into a typical breadfast diner and ask the patrons whether or not they care the eggs they are eating come from hens packed into cages. Likely you will be told what bothers them is to have to pay more for a single egg than a dozen cost down at the local supermarket.
