Belted Galloways

Does anyone here have experience with, or knowledge of, this breed? I am especially interested in how they perform in a warm area of the country, such as the hill country of Texas?

Thx!!

Missouri Heat and humidity.....

Mine did fine in Missouri heat and humidity......as long as there is some shade for them.....I do find it interesting though, that the coats do "vary" depending upon the genetics and I assume the geography too.

My cows will "slick" down pretty good in the late spring summer, but having seen the cows of another breeder in Missouri, I was surprised at the hair coat still on in mid June.......so I think genetics of the stock could weigh heavily on the coat......but again, mine did not seem bothered by the heat and humidity and 100 degree days.

Thanks!! What do you think of the breed? I like the supposed disease resistance and easy calving. What was your experience with how big they get? Quality of meat? Have you tried the beef? Did you ever show them, and if so, how do they perform in an arena setting?

I know, lots of questions. Thank you, and everyone, for their patience!!

Belties

So far so good......I bought a 4 year old and her heifer calf.....the cow has calved....I have a 5 month old bull calf.....it has a white tip on the tail, so can not be registered, so will raise it for my first beltie beef.....I selected the breed because I am going to try grass fed beef and much of my research showed the breed to be pretty good grazers and gain on "less than ideal" pasture......and I can attest, they will eat heartily what the other cows will bypass!

The calf has done extremely well on the pasture and hay we have provided. As for "behavior," they seem a little "skittish" around most, but are pretty good around me.....and I think that is typical of most cows around their owners.

I have not shown the cattle and at this point, unless my youngest gets interested, I think we will focus mainly on breeding stock.
