Feeding steer

Ok so my question is this. If you owned a steer(black angus) and you were feeding him hay and grain, how much grain would you give him in one days time?

Depends how big he is and how much you want him to gain and how quickly you want him to gain.

Agreed. What is your ADG (average daily gain) goal? My goal is 2.5 lbs per day. I am just shy of that on pasture while still on cow.

Well when we got him(my step-dads boss bought him at the fair and gave him to us) he weighed 515 pounds. That was in the last part of august. We are not sure on his age but he was a feeder calf project so I say right now he is at least a year. I am going to guess that he is right around 800 maybe 850 (just guessing here) For the last couple of months he has been getting close to 20 pounds of grain a day with all the hay he wants. We plan to butcher this fall.

I would, if he was my critter slowly take him off grain, when he is set for the feeding out start increasing the grain up. say you are going to butcher in October start ramping him up 110 - 140 days before the big day( start at two pounds and slowly increase it to the 20-25 pound range). and his last 24 hours no feed just water. dry age him from 14 to 28 days going by how he grades.
