Our Red Poll is home!
Our nice Red Poll cow is home as of yesterday and we milked her out tonight. Took quite some doing though. "Rosie" had still had a calf on her, but we didn't take the calf. She is 4 yo and had never been milked. She is quite docile in general, but a bit cantankerous when it came to having her udder messed with tonight. We put her in a grooming chute and hobbled her legs. She didn't care to eat our grain, so we'll have to work on that. We still have a cleanliness issue and will probably be a couple days before getting all the manure out of her coat. She's going through a lot of anxiety. We took a gallon tonight, although I'm sure she was holding back. We got a clean pint's worth, enough to sample and it's quite delicious! (DH says "no goaty taste!") We should be able to milk her until June and she is due anytime after the first of September. I wasn't completely prepared to bring a fresh cow home and I'm looking for a source for a USA-made stainless steel pail with lid. (For the goats, I just needed a glass bowl.) Any leads would be appreciated.
