Stanchions

What size do you make your stanchions? I keep bottle calves and need 8 tie stanchions set up, so I can bring them in and grain feed them.

For Calves we have 36" wide by 66" long plywood box stalls. These work until calf is 75 -90 days old maximum. In large part stall size depends on if you want to continue to use stalls as animals get larger. Most commercial farms will go to pens and feed grain in trough once calves reach 300 pounds plus. But, if you wanted stalls to tie up each individually all the way up to Adult, I would venture that 42" wide by 66" Long would work.

42" wide might work well for Jerseys, but for other large breeds, 48" is even small. I saw some of my heifers go into the Jersey's stalls that are 48" wide, and they could never lay down (they went in, but weren't allowed to stay in). I would leave a calf pen as a calf pen, or stall, and have seperate stalls to accomidate adults.
