Talking They're here!!!!!!

Well, not where I'm at (I'm 100 miles away from the farm at school in the city of Edmonton right now, actually).

But we got new calves!!! Fresh off their mommas!! I haven't seen them yet, and I'm really looking forward to SEEING them...they came on saturday morning at 10 am, all 80 of them...

Dunno how much we got for them or anything like that, but when I do see them this weekend, I'm sending pics (lots of them)...we got some black angus, a few charolais (I'm glad their not nearly as many as what we had last year), and the rest of the herd is simmi's and simmi-crosses, as well as some herfords and maybe some red angus X's. We also got a real odd ball in there: from what I heard on the phone from home, he's got a roan-colored hide, probably what a shorthorn bovine would have. He's already my favorite one and I haven't even seen 'im yet, LOL!!

I can't wait for this week to end to see them, nor to show yall them here! :baby04:

I can't promise that I'll show myself in one of the pics, but I'll try...btw, I'm the only one that knows how to take pictures with the digital camera...still have to teach mom and dad the know hows and stuff like that...

I think I just sounded like I was making excuses there, don't you? Pics WILL be on this weekend, I can promise you that, folks!

I'm taking Animal Science (getting my bachelor's degree) at the University of Alberta, and plan on specializing in beef, but I'm still not sure of what field of the beef business I want to go into...btw, I'm only in my second year here anyway. The An Sci degree I'm taking is in with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics...so yeah, I am an aggie at heart :baby04:

here they are...

Finally, after waiting for days to see those little guys, I finally got the chance to go out this morning and do some looking and some pic taking.

There are a lot of brown-hided calves, mostly simmentalX, and also a few hereford and red angus too. And BLACK calves! I took a pic of that "roany" calf below, only he's not roan, he's more of a shorthorn cross or something like that, (correct me if I'm wrong when you see him). There's a few charolais, and a tarentaise (see pic below), and a couple of grey ones too (one's dark grey, the other is light) I wanted to get a pic of that lighter-grey calf but the little rascal kept putting the bale between me and him.

When Dad had been needling, he split the herd of 82 into 42 in the back and 40 in the front. AND, another thing I noticed was that these ones are a heck of a lot calmer than the last herd, even though there's still a few wild ones in there.

It's cold out this morning (-23 C), and the calves are pretty frosty this morning, and I just about froze my camera-hand (it's hard to take pictures with thick cow-hide gloves). It's supposed to be warmer this afternoon (forecast of about -10 C), so I'll be out taking more pics, and try and be around as much as possible to get them a little more used to me (they're still a little flighty, but they'll settle down).

No pics of me yet though!

Okay, enough talk, and lets see some cattle...

They're here!!!!!! - Cattle
here they are, these are some of the back ones...

And there's the "roan" calf--shorthornX, right?? (tell me if I'm wrong)

They're here!!!!!! - Cattle
At the salt block--see the black ones in there?

They're here!!!!!! - Cattle
At the bale...

They're here!!!!!! - Cattle
and here's this dark grey-white face I was talking about--it's kinda hard to see if he's grey or not, I know, but he's grey...

Front calves at the bale feeder...

Here's a tarentaise calf...

Calves in order from darkest to light!

Black calf!

One other thing. They all average out to be about 500 lbs; they came from Westlock (Triple J auction mart), and Dad bought them for $108.24/100lbs.

I'm on dial-up , which makes uploading pics really slow, so I'll maybe get some more pics of these calves on Monday, if y'all want.

Anyway, tell me what you think of them...

Nice cattle, and I really like that nice green bale of alfalfa, looks like some good stuff. Judging by the bale, looks like a 5x5 or 5x6?

Either way, all the pictures of cattle, but no karin, hmmm.

Great pics.
I never get tired of them.

I'm not any kind of expert, but they look good to me.

Thanks for posting like you do. I really appreciate the look into your families operation!
