A free Jersey/Holstein cross; weaned!

The guy who is AI'ing my Jerseys gave me a Jersey/Holstein cross bull today. He has a bunch of Holstein calves he is raising for market and this little guy, being half Jersey, isn't going to keep up with the others in the herd so he passed him on to me. He just weaned the calf yesterday so he is only 3 months old, still, it is a cute little guy and in another year or so he'll make some even cuter beef.

As it turns out, the calf's momma is/was a first calf heifer so they bred her to a Jersey for the smaller calf, but also for richer milk should it have been a heifer.

Actually I've never posted pictures; don't understand how it's done. I have sent pictures to others and let them post for me.

He's a handsome little guy. He was black with a small white patch on his right flank, but he is now turning brown. Well, he is still black, but his undercoat is brown and his ears are turning brown.

When the guy told me about the calf a few weeks back I shrugged it off as "passing gas" and thought even if he did bring the calf it would be a dwarf or something strange, but he is just a Channel Island cross and the butchers are sure to see it later when he goes to auction. The AI guy just decided to cut his losses now; the calf has only been on a nurse cow and hay, she had three calves on her, so there has been no great investment. He even wormed the calf (pour on) before bringing him over.

I put him in the pen with my 8 month old oxen in training, and the older calf is horrified of him. They're both tied, so there won't be any fighting.

Well, I have seen jersey and holstein calves (I let one suck my hand a few times), so I could imagine he would be a real cutee!

Again, congrats, and I'm glad you're happy with him!
