UltraSound

Had some animals ultra sounded, for pregnancy. One was a recheck, she is still pregnant and due May 29th, a Jersey due to Brook Bomber, she is the best Jersey cow we have, very correct throughout.

Had "Speedy" checked, she wasn't pregnant, however she was rebred in less than 30 days, it takes 30-35 days to do the ultrasound and pickup on a pregnancy. So I will watch her closely around the 12th, and if she doesn't show any sign, ill have her ultrasounded again around the 22nd or so.

Back last month I had "Red" preg checked, the vet said she was not pregnant, he did say before he left, do not lute her, she could be pregnant. You can sometimes have a false negative. So today was going to be a certainty. Well she is pregnant, she will be due May 17th to Ladino Park Talent. There is a chance it will be a R&W calf, hopefully it will be a R&W heifer, heck I want a heifer .

Had another one ultrasounded, she was confirmed pregnant back after the fair, more or less was for the heck of it. He was trying to determine the sex, but it wasn't in the right position.

So ultrasounding? Is it good? It doesn't seem to disrupt what is in there, it will take a picture of a CL, and it did in speedy. It also confirmed a pregnancy in a cow that was deemed not pregnant. So I think from now on, I will have them ultrasounded, vs palpated. There are MAJOR benefits. You can check at 30-35 days, you do not need to wait till 42-60 days. So if an animal isn't pregnant, you can then be aware before the potential "42" days. A lot of time is lost in that 12 extra days. So ask your vet about it, or ask around, it does a good job.

42 days?
I keep hearing all these vets that won't palpate all that early.
Ours palpate at 30-33 days post breeding. The cows get put on recheck next herd health just to be sure if they are confirmed.

I understand the risks involved (potential loss of pregnancy from the slipping method used when palpating that early a pregnancy), but am confident with the older vet (not so much the new young vet).

I'm wondering on price as well.

The setup fee for the ultrasound is $25, $30 for showing up, and 96 an hour. Cost me for the four 96, that includes the visit, setup etc. Our regular vet charges about 60-70 for the same amount of animals (palpate). There aren't any vets locally that will palpate at 30-33 days, so ultrasound worked well. What is nice about it, you can see the "calf" of sorts, and if she isn't in heat, you can determine a healthy CL.

Locally we can now take a blood sample send it into a lab 40 days after breeding and for $2.00 they will check to see if their bred. Cheaper than palpating and easier also.
