Udder Size

Our Galloway calved nearly a month ago. Mom and calf appear to be doing fine, however over the past two weeks, the cows udder size has decreased tremendously. Seems like in other cows I have seen, milk production seems to increase for a few months, and appear to have a very heavy bag. It almost appears she seems to be drying up, as her udder is not much bigger than our heifer. This is her third calf. The calf is energetic, so I am not too worried, but is this unusual?

If all the milk the cow produces is not taken, she will adjust her production down to match the amount consumed by the calf. That sounds like what's probably happened. If you see the calf nursing regularly, and the calf appears healthy, as you say, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The calf will also eat more in his second two months than he will in his first. He may be keeping the cow drained. The calf will start eating more grass and less milk as he hits four months and over.......some calves are such pigs that they can keep a good-producing Jersey cow drained of milk.
