Anaplasmosis- Cure Or Vaccine?

We Had A 2 Yo Heifer- Never Bred- Become Listless, Rarely Eating, Drinking Ok As Far As We Knew. After We Got Her Up In The Pen, We Fed Her Well And Watered Her Well For 24 Hrs. Then Loaded Her In A Pen To Go To Her Owners Home Pens And She Collapsed In The Trailer N Transit And Refused To Get Out And Died That Night.

That Was On July 31. She May Have Been Pregnant But Did Not Look It. She Had A Clear Discharge Of Somesort.

Today, August 20 Found A Mature Cow Of That Same Pasture Dead,L ABOUT 5 MONTHS PREGNANT. For The Last 4 Days, She Has Not Joined.the Small Herd Of 5 For A Few Pellets To Keep Them Occupied While I Went To Other Side Of Pasture To Special Feed The Bull. She Would Just Stand Wherever She Was When I Got There And Not Come Over To The Feeding. Yesterday I Went Over To Where She Was To Do The Feeding And The Others Came To Her.

Mosquitoes And Flies Have Been A Constant Battle This Summer. The Cows Have Plenty Of Grass, A Pond, 40 Acres To Roam In.

In The Three Years Of Having Cows, Have Only Lost One, And That Was In Breech Birth In A Remote Pasture.

Someone Suggested This Might Be Anaplasmosis. The Cow Did Have A Trickle Of Blood Out Of One Nostril-[the Corpse Did]

Thanks,

Mum

Same here

Started acting draggy about thursday. Died Sat. night. I suspect same thing as you. Horseflies are problems here. Another cow is folloing the same path. Few summers ago I had a run on this. Had dead animal truck out twice in one day.

Thanks

Thanks - I Will Check Them Out Now. It Really Hurts To Loose One When You Have A Small Herd And They Love To See You Coming With The Feed Bucket

What color was the blood when you noticed it?

An animal with anaplasmosis will have blood that almost looks like water because the red blood cells are missing.

I treated a dog through anaplasmosis once. It took a couple shots from the vet to kill the parasite causing the problems.

This is a vet call.

Losing one animal under mysterious circumstances is one thing. Losing two is a crisis in my book. I would have had the vet out to check out the body of the dead cow to see if a diagnosis could be made.

Your whole herd could be at risk. Get the vet.

The Blood In The Nostral Was Noticed On The Corpse. It Was Dark Red. & Not Very Much Of It. No Vet To Call. Only One Would Come Out Here Died Tragically This Summer. I Have Been Treating The Rest Of The Herd With A Feed That Has Oxytetracyline. Alternating With A Grower Finisher Feed And A Few Pellets. The First One That Died Was Buried In The Next County Somewhere That Owner Was Going To Let Me Know What He Found Out, But Have Not Heard From Him Yet. I Email The State Dept Of Ag Asking For Assistance But Have Not Heard From Them. I Know That If They Consider It Suspicious They Will Send An Investigator.

I know when the vet took a blood sample from my dog that had anaplasmosis, it was clear like water. Also, it just kept coming because the blood couldn't clot. It took forever to get his leg to quit bleeding.

If the blood you saw was dark red, I would look for another cause at least based on my previous novice experience with this.
