Angry Shoo fly, dont bother me!

Its summer, and y'all know what that means, flys are flying everywhere! I have put some flytape up in the barn, but i need some advice on what some of the best insect repellents are so i may make things more comfortable in the barn for both me and my animals!

I have been using DE (diamatous earth) for the past month and have noticed a sharp decrease in the fly population in my barn yard. I mix a tablespoon into six pounds of 13% cattle feedfeed each morning. This is enought DE for four large steers. Another teaspoon mixed into goat feed to feed twelve goats, approx. two pound of feed. My fly population was unbelievable before starting the DE routine. The weather has not changed a bit, plenty of rain and lots of heat....I'm happy and so are the animals...Tennessee John

Guess it depends what kind of animals you have in your barns. For my chicken house I use the hanging Flying Insect Killer by Hot Shot. It's a solid insectecide in a plastic hanger that gets rid of flies and wasps. For our cattle we use Double Barrel Fly Ear Tags in each ear, have a hanging rub they walk under with insectecide and we feed a fly block that kills the fly larve. We have very few flies this year...maybe it the 100 degree temps and it is very very dry.

Maybe you need to get some free ranging chickens to eat the fly eggs in the yard and buildings. You could also go to your farm store and buy some building spray to spray the inside of the building to kill the fly eggs....and then start with some program that will continue to control the eggs flies lay in manuer. For horses there is a topical spray you can put on them...but I don't know about goats. Also..at the farm store you can get an automatic, battery operated insecticide dispenser that sprays a fine mist every 30 minutes to control flies. You have lots of options available to you.....check them out either on-line or at your farm store or local feed store.
