jersey/holstein steer

Can any of the members give me an idea what a jersey/holstein steer at approximately 12 months taste like. They've been grain fed throughout. Is there any comparison to the other breeds, what to expect for fat content? Thanks.

I'm a 100% grass-fed farmer so can't comment on his taste in terms of diet but in every other respect he should be damned good eating. With the Jersey in him expect to get yellowy looking fat although that doesn't alway follow. I've killed cross-bred Jerseys and the fat has been white, in others there has been a definate yellow tinge.

I'm not conversant with how much fat a grain fed animal will put on as opposed to a grass-fed but at his age he is still growing and using up plenty of energy so unless he has been overfed, he shouldn't be overweight and nicely rounded.

Cheers,
Ronnie

Holstein is the best meat you can get.We have butchered 4 so far in the past few years.Usually feed grass, then silage and grain. The last 1-2 months put them on full corn ,alfalfa, and sorgrum feed. All they can eat. Kill weight is around 1800 lbs. BUT be ready for some big steaks, that will melt in your mouth.... idontno
