Thumbs up Ellie Moo update

Last week I stopped into the vets office to pick up dog wormer and schedule an appointment. I took a picture of her so the receptionist could see her. She has answered a lot of my questions and managed to get us in on a Monday. I don't even call their office on a Monday unless it is an emergency. So I thought that it was fair that she got to see how she was doing. She thought she was doing very well. The vet came up and saw the picture and said "I am surprised, I didn't think she would make it this far".
Well thanks to all the prayer and support she has. He got to see her in person today. He thinks she is doing very well. She moves around good. And is old enough that some of the problems shouldn't be a concern any more. He says she is a little small. 75 days and 142 pounds. It took her a while to catch on to how good grain is. So maybe that will change. I asked about her heart. He said we will just have to wait and see if it can support a full grown cow. So I have a while before I need to worry more. After we got done with all the animals, I threw out the question about breeding her. He said we will just have to wait and see about her size. But didn't say it wouldn't be possible!!!!! I still take her day by day. But I have given some thought to her future. And I don't think it will be dinner!

I just saw this post. What is the concern with Ellie Moo's heart? Corabelle was a tiny gal (50# at 5 weeks old). She definitely grew into a good size holstein (and kept growing right up to about age 3 + years old). I'd bet when I sold her she was every bit of 1200 + lbs.

How is Ellie Moo doing following the goat around?

So many ailments it has been hard to keep up with all of them. She had beat all of them except for the blindness and the heart murmur. Back when I first took her in to see the vet, I repeatedly asked him about the septic arthitis (navel ill) and he told me then that it was the least of his concerns, which surprised me because of what I knew about it. She had a very bad heart murmur and didn't know if she would grow out of it. She hasn't yet. But it doesn't seem to be holding her back at all.
The goats still don't want anything to do with her. The kids are small enough that they will wonder through her pen, but don't know what to think about her. The wether I was hoping to use still hasn't shown much interest. He is bigger than her so I have been waiting until she grows some more to try to put them together. I might be able to find her a cow for a buddy. Some time ago, before I got her, I went to the sale barn. I was just looking to see what the goats where going through for. But I met an older gentleman that has cows, his wife has goats. At that time he offered to sell me one for less than what they where going through the sale for. I had forgot all about it until I drove by his house. He seems to have cows of different ages. Next week I will stop in and talk to him and see if he is willing to part with something that would work with Ellie. We still have more fencing to do. Most of the place is all done in electric and I won't turn her out in that. We have been working on getting it changed out, but it takes time and money. We are hopefull for her future. I can't imagine my life without her now.

I'm glad Christina spotted this post - I'd hate to miss an Ellie Moo update.

I'm so glad that you aren't thinking of turning her into Ellie-burgers. I'm a big fan of pet cows. We figure our Connie more than earns her keep with her lawn mowing and weed whacking skills, light hauling and our cow riding practice. And even if she was just a friendly lawn ornament she'd have a place here for life - but it sure is easier to justify it when we see her climbing up a waterfall and munching weeds. (It's great having a cow that has had mobility training from goats on hills and who enjoys being near water.)

Give Ellie a good chin scratch for us!

Lynda
