Fair value for a 14 mo. old open Jersey heifer

HI,

I have the opportunity to buy a 14 mo old, open Jersey heifer. This heifer has little halter training thus far.

What would you anticipate her value to be? The owner is not sure what to charge, and I will need to drive 3-4 hours through really nasty traffic (south Chicago through Indiana) to pick her up.

Thanks!

Depends. Is she registered? What is her sire, and what was her dam's sire? Those can play into her price. However as a ball park figure. A jersey heifer, breeding age, would probably bring with the market down some. I would say anywhere from 800-1500. Again it depends on her breeding, registered or not. Grade would be about 800-1000, registered would be over 1000, with good breeding.

Jersey ventures

A reasonable rate of exchange would be $1.60 to $1.75 per lb. So for example a 700 lb. heifer would be $1120 to $1225. Assuming good health, not fancy registered , just a good animal. Dairy heifers are in high demand and command strong prices at present.
If you are willing to drive into the Belly of the Beast(Chicago) and over thru Gary, Indiana, you want a heifer pretty badly indeed, LOL. ..cheers...

Must be a different market out that way. Prices are down at the local registered breeds auctions (Holsteins especially), by about $1000. The top selling animal at the local B&W sale last year was 3500, this year it was 2200.

Sounds like the market is starting to reflect the $10-$11 milk prices. Any female breedable dairy stock in Wisconsin have sure been high priced relative to milk prices. I see good grade Holstien cows have slipped from $2,000 @ down into $1,700 -$1,800 range last few weeks here.
