thinking ahead

I can buy a ixed bred calf that is weaned for $300 from the breeder
i can then put it in the back pasture whichis about 8 acres I acassionaly let the horses out to run and graze along with the goats.
Cold weather sets in about Sept till March so i would have to feed for a time
so is it still worth it to buy a clf to rasie for the freezer I still need to find out what butchering cost

What is the breed mix? Is the calf weaned from a cow or from a bottle/bucket? What is the approximate weight of the animal at this time? Does the back pasture have water and shade? If you are going to carry the calf into the fall do you have hay and grain or will you be buying it?

water is almost there but isnt a problem a hose could be rigged up in seconds
yes there is a huge cottonwood for shade
and I would have to buy hay and grain for winter time
unsure of bred or weaned from what

With the limited info and the fact you expect to carry the animal into Fall and incur that expense I would pass. I would consider buying a thin cow that had a hard winter and then let her graze until fall, feed a little grain and slaughter her.
