Linda answers that question quite well.

"I'm a beekeeper inside Atlanta's perimeter highway. My hives are on the deck behind my house."

I've had them as close as 10 feet from my back door with no problem.

I've had them as far as 100 yards from my back door and they would hunt me down and sting me at my back door. I'm glad those weren't 10 feet from my back door.

Far enough that the door doesn't hit them when you open it.

Talking

Friend in New York City has his 3 feet out side his 6th floor apartment on that tiny deck.

Thank you all for your help. I wanted, and now with your help, am going to put them on the side of the house in a flower/veggie garden. The family thought that would be to close. I'm glad I asked.

The only thing I would be watchful for would be those times when the bees are hungry because there is no nectar flow available. They will come looking for food and your sugared iced tea or Coke will do just fine. We have 3 hives about 250 yards from the front porch and I know it is time to feed my bees (usually in Feb.) when we have 100 or so bees joining us on the porch for drinks and snacks. They aren't agressive or stinging just annoying.

You can go closer if you cut in a second back door.

Just make sure the path to the door doesn't cut through their flight path
