No, to all three. I moved to a secluded location, with no full time neighbors for a reason. That reason is that this forum is about as much socialization as I want.

I'd fall into C. I wouldn't go into this arrangement, because I prefer more privacy. Also, it might work out if the tenants got along well with each other, but it would be very difficult if they didn't.

I'd answer yes to A, B and C....contingent upon the house is the one I'm living in now on my own 40 acres.

By what you have listed for 'A' it's actually a pretty good deal. My Mom lives in a assisted living/low income place (her choice). She has everything you have listed except the medical for 1/3 of her income. Many people live in retirement centers and pay much more that.

I may do something like 'A' when I'm older. Couldn't do 'B' or 'C'. Enjoy my freedom to much.

Retirement home here takes 35 per cent of income for apartment for low in come seniors. Not sure what per cent it is now and it all income not just SS. One meal a day is gray gourmet 5 days week and they used volunteers to serve the meals. Last I heard $1.75 but I am more like $2.25 now a meal or more. They may plant a little garden. That pays utilities and not phone, cable or internet. I would guess much more than the 35 per cent now. Government backed to start with.

My BIL tried the VA retirement home as not well and he did not last there. You had to pay for laundary and medicene and he got room and board. Community type living was not for him.

Major medical could be very costly.

Would I pay half my SS for what would be rent and meals and ins.And have use of a house? You take care of all repairs and up keep on the house? You shovel the snow in winter? How many rooms in house? Washer and dryer? or Wash room for all? Even with two meals a day one would need a fridge for stuff for breakfast as I presume the two meals are dinner and supper. (Lunch/dinner) Will it be all you can eat or just what is served on the plate? Is that half SS before or after taxes? Would I have room for small garden? Space to park if you had you a motor home and car? You mow the lawn and keep the weeds down if any? Town or country?

Where would the 30 hour a week homesteaders get money for other living expenses? That would end up a 70 hour week. Even part time added to 30 is lot of hours to work.

Regarding A- Licensure of your doctor and nurse and malpractice becomes an issue. Continuing education is expensive and a lot of older medical staff retire when their colleagues notice they are no longer open or able to learn new information or treatments. A "limited" license, such as a lot of doctors have so they can do volunteer work here in FL after retirement- does NOT include ability to write prescriptions. They can recommend a prescription and tell the patient to go to the ER and ask for it, or recommend OTC and herbal treamtnts.
I would do it if I was significantly disabled, but in this state Adult Living Residents may only need 40 hours or less of skilled nursing care a week and must be able to self evacuate the facility in an ememgency

Hi Colorado,

The plan so far is: retired persons drawing SS or a retirement would pay X amount per month . They would not be required to work at all. For their payment, they would own a small home over time, utilities based on (at this time) Hoping to become all solar for electric, and heat and A/c based on a eco-village concept. All the food they can eat (hopefully to be all farm fresh, raised and grown from within the town, some food items will have to be bought. Hope to have a small medical facility within the town for all. Again these are ideas that have to be hashed out.

Younger families and singles would work X amount of hours as needed to do everything that is required to run such a town. They would recieve the same package for their work.

Small business within the town could hire residents to increase input into the community.

Looking to refine the idea to a workable scenario.

Ditto on what Cabin Fever said.

If someone is willing to setup a communal kitchen -- you can have "A" in a little town about 10 miles south west of me.

It sounds awful socalist for my tastes.

How do you think you're going to be able to pay for health care for a bunch of elderly retirees?
