The last fence I built was on my Dad's place, with Dad and I working in shifts. Wooden posts dug with a post hole digger. One wooden fence rail about 8, maybe 10" off the ground. 4" chicken wire for teh main fencing with one strand of electric up at the top. That was for horses.

An electric fence is only as good as the electircal ground you install. The drier the soil conditions, the more this becomes a factor. I strongly recomend installing at least two ground rods in the drip line of a major building, preferably on the shade side. The moisture really helps the ground.

A fence could put out 20,000 volts at 1 amp, but if you arn't grounded it won't do anything. Birds land on my fence all the time.

Go nuts on the ground rods, install a few along the fence line if need be.

Since you mention it, I'm curious....what does it cost for you to run an electric fence. And so I can know for comparison purposes, how many feet of fencing do you have.

Thanks,
shae
It seems to be costing me almost $20 a month on my electric bill. Now honestly, I've never bothered to examine my KW usage, just the $ figure. And with the deregulation, the price per KW changes with every bill. So that $20 estimate may be quite off. The information I was able to find about how much fence chargers are supposed to cost gave figures of a dollar a month to $7 a month.

Right now it's not running a long fence. It's surrounding my aviary. About ten 100' strands.
