How about a "solar still". All it takes is a hole in the ground, a sheet of clear plastic and something to collect the water in. Oh ya, and the sun.

Last Thanksgiving, we were without water for 4 days...well, our well was out. We had several gallons of water for drinking that were bottled (always on our shelf) and we went to the stream and got water for toilets, animals, and washing.

This was the first day of hunting season so we couldn't find ANYONE out here to come out and fix it. The previous owner did the wiring wrong on the pump and it was shorted out (thank goodness it was just a short because it's an EXPENSIVE replace - well is 1100 feet + down so it is a 15hp? pump - just remember the guy freaking out when they finally pulled it up, hoping for us and our bank account it was working)

I think we'd get sick on bleach - I've been looking at teh purifiers at Lehman's - might go that route...plus we have a second well that didn't produce enough when they went to hook up - going to put a cistern pump on it so we aren't lugging hundereds of gallons up a steep hill for livestock!!!

I think anyone that lives off a well that is grid connected should learn, and be prepared to live without your faucets!

When this pump goes (if we don't move) we are replacing with DC and solar!!!!
