I received a cottonmouth bite on my leg one time when I stepped off a rock while crossing a creek. We killed the snake, so were able to positively identify it. I guess you would classify it as a semi-dry bite because the fangs only penetrated just below the skin & the only result was an infected area about the size of a half dollar. I still carry the scar. I was treated with antibiotics.
My Dad was bitten on the thumb by a cottonmouth while repairing a water-gap (fence crossing). The snake was in some driftwood that had washed up against the fence. One fang penetrated just behind his thumbnail. He lost the nail & almost lost the thumb. He was treated with antibiotics & the necrotic area was debrided.
My brother was bitten on the side by a copperhead while scrambling down a riverbank. He was hospitalized for a couple of days & received antivenin. He had some problems for a while but eventually recovered completely.
My dog was bitten on the nose by a copperhead when he rushed in front of me while I was walking in a brushy, weedy area. I'm confident I would have taken the bite had he not grabbed the snake. He was a small dog, but his head swelled to an enormous size. We forced water down his throat & kept ice packs & antibiotics on the bite & ice on his throat to try & keep it from swelling shut. He was one sick puppy for a few days, but completely recovered.

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. I appreciate ther time and interest you've shown. I still have a few more questions that I will post in a new poll/ thread. Oltex, a dry bite is one where the fangs have penetrated- there was actually a bite from an agitated snake but no venom was injected. It ishard to tell if that snake released venom or not. I'm glad you and everyone is okay. My dry bites drew blood and itched like crazy but there was no infection. I did however get a bite from what I think was a brown recluse in autumn last year and that became infected immediately and I have a scar that looks like etchings on my foot.

Things that people worry about can be pretty rare things...snake bites, poisonous spiders, turtle bites, lightning strikes, salmonella, trichonosis(sp?), crossed eyes getting stuck, West Nile virus, etc, etc. Hearing stories from folks may make the occurances true, but it doesn't make them common. ray

Thought I was the only one who noticed that there isn't a question about people never being bitten. shows how skewed polls are. just make up the facts and word the question just right.voilla. Its like magic.

Nope, Me neither
Hi Y'all,
Hunnh, Yeah, I missed that part on the Poll too.
Nope, I've never been bitten.
Nope, I've never known anyone bitten either.
Had a Friend get his Gelding bit, last week, by a Copperhead.
My friend shot the Copperhead.
I think he gave his Gelding(Big boy, 16.2 hands high)
about 5 bottles of liquid Benedryl. Horse is just fine.
My Friend has shot 5 Copperheads out there in his
Hollow, in Brown County, IN. Unusual lot of them this year.
Usually he only finds 2 or 3.
We see a lot of snakes in our pond, when it's dry like this.
But, they swim away from us so we don't shoot them.
Have a good-un.

I've not known a person that was bitten by a snake, but have had 3 dogs & 3 sheep bitten by rattlesnakes; 2 of the dogbite cases, there was a dead snake as evidence, 1 dog was bitten in the face, & 2 in the leg - all recovered, w/veterinary care & antibiotics. The one w/no dead snake was bitten in the hind leg, & I think she must have been running the fence line & stepped on the snake by accident.
The sheep - sheep are fascinated w/snakes, & will practically stand on their heads to get close & look at them, particularly if they are rattling (aack! - I've removed a rattlesnake once, before he bit anything, that the flock was converging on) - I had a pregnant ewe get bitten (killed the snake the next day), who was 1 month short of lambing - she aborted, but lived, an open ewe was bitten, but recovered, & a nursing lamb was bitten & recovered (I think he must not have gotten much, as he was real little, although his whole head swelled up). All sheep were treated w/anti-inflammatories, & all were bitten in the face.
A friend's Angora goat doe (that was nursing twins) stepped on a rattlesnake when going out to pasture, was struck in the chest, & died.
I won't harm non-poisonous snakes (gophers, kings, garters, rosy boas), but I get rid of any rattlesnakes I find.
