We had trouble with a squatter once ...

The guy had been in and out of trouble with the law and was real piece of trash. The sheriff's dept. wouldn't do anything to remove him, calling it a "civil matter", because somehow he managed to pay his fines to the court system every month.

So, with a .38 holstered on my hip, I merely pointed out "the facts of life" to this guy: 1) I have a gun ... 2) I own a backhoe ... 3) I know how to use them ... 4) Nobody would miss him ... and 5) Would he remove himself from my property or would he prefer to become a permanent part of the landscape?
He was gone in considerably less than 24 hours.

(Pointing out "the facts of life" has worked on trespassers too.)

I didn't realize how tough it was to get squatter off your land.
Even more difficult to get squatters off of your neighbors land ...

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to live in California.

In the two rural counties I've lived in, this is one of them, trespassing is a serious offense and is dealt with immediately by arrest if the property is posted. I doubt the law would be very swift here but they would show up eventually.

I had a cabin in Montana and finally got tired of not being able to use it. Finally decided to take it into my own hands and they burned the place down. I took the insurance money and sold the land. Local cops would do nothing for me. Same with a friend in the same area he got tired of it and his burned down too.

It might be interesting to call a local newspaper or TV channel -
If I were a reporter, I'd do a story on it -

At most, law enforcement might be embarassed enough to do something about it

At least, people would be more aware about their rights & the local situation

Afraid you don't understand the facts of life in CA. Public land means open for use of every homeless person from anywhere in the country. If you own the land, and they get access to it while you are not physically using it, it must be public. Attempt to enforce property rights will normally result in protests against you for harassing the less fortunate, you are an unthinking, greedy, right-wing capitalist fascist if you think you should be allowed to use your own property and any sweeps of public areas result in mass protests. Most of the media (depending on location of course) will side against the owner. It took us 9 months and our farm is in one of the more property rights friendly areas of the state.

This is making me think of this movie called "Pacific Heights"(?) with
Michael Keaton (I think?) where he wouldn't leave this apartment or
house he was being evicted from. Good movie.

These people have no legal right to the property,You think law enforcement is unenthustiastic about helping the property owner ,Do you really think they are gonna care about what happens to this trash.Do not resort to violence for any reason other than truly justifiable self defence! The property owner needs to grow a couple and Take a couple guys and go over there,HOOK ONTO THE TRAILER AND DRAG IT OUT TO THE ROAD!I would not care if the scumbags were inside or not,Then I would repair the gate, dig a ditch across the road ,dirt berm whatever it took to keep these people from entering property again.

Perhaps your friend needs to hire someone to spread manure to enrich the soil.

PCWERK- I rented the movie today it was good.
Update. Saw the captain today with hubby. Nice talk, friendly smiles but other than saying how he heard my issues, he launched right into how understaffed, how thier hands were tied etc.
I made a point of asking how far I as a citizen could go with making them "uncomfortable" the reply was always call us!
The landowner has no balls and is hesitant to get involved by filing a trespassing report. I cannot pay to have the trailer removed because it is not my property.
Help _How to convince the owner that we would be grateful for him to do the right thing and file the report and secure his property.

Post You "encourage" the squatters to leave

Don't worry so much about the landowner, simply find ways to "encourage" the squatters to leave. Examples would be to take photos of them (or pretend you are photographing them) for hours at a time. Or videotaping them. Pull up a lawn chair and stare at them for a few hours.

Or perhaps set up a target shoot parallel to their trailer so that you won't hit them, but shoot for several hours over the course of a few days, especially 12 gauge shotguns and deer rifles. Invite as many friends over as you can for a shooting competition and make so much noise that they can't stand it.

Or shine spotlights on them at night for hours at at a time.

Or if you have health codes in your area, look them up and use them to move them out. I hate to suggest that as I prefer to let others be, but I don't agree with having squatters either.

I guess i should specify the landowner. ;-)

Then you could probably evict the squatter.

BTW isn't there a angry Mom squatting outside of George W. Bushes Ranch?

Quote:
Maureen Dowd’s back: Why No Tea and Sympathy? (shorter Maureen: squatter boy doesn’t have the moral authority to hide from Cindy): ‘It’s amazing that the White House does not have the elementary shrewdness to have Mr. Bush simply walk down the driveway and hear the woman out, or invite her in for a cup of tea. But W., who has spent nearly 20 percent of his presidency at his ranch, is burrowed into his five-week vacation and two-hour daily workouts. He may be in great shape, but Iraq sure isn’t…

‘…It’s getting harder for the president to hide from the human consequences of his actions and to control human sentiment about the war by pulling a curtain over the 1,835 troops killed in Iraq; the more than 13,000 wounded, many shorn of limbs; and the number of slain Iraqi civilians - perhaps 25,000, or perhaps double or triple that. More people with impeccable credentials are coming forward to serve as a countervailing moral authority to challenge Mr. Bush…

‘… Selectively humane, Mr. Bush justified his Iraq war by stressing the 9/11 losses. He emphasized the humanity of the Iraqis who desire freedom when his W.M.D. rationale vaporized. But his humanitarianism will remain inhumane as long as he fails to understand that the moral authority of parents who bury children killed in Iraq is absolute.’

w/more and more people becoming aware of Cindy’s heroic stunt, will ‘R’ dum-Bo prez have the balls to come out? somewhere in the air conditioned bowels of his phoney ranch, he’s spilling Jim Beam all over karl while hissing ‘******, she’s still out there! DO something, you fat piece o’ ****!’ as they both peer at the hidden camera strategically placed to watch Cindy 24/7, y’know, just in case (cause it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially if you’re the unelected preznit whose foolish macho ****caused this mother’s son to die needlessly)
