I live in the SE corner of Douglas county its 30 miles north, south east or west, to any town so no running into town for just one thing. And ditto to what all have said about the area I like the fact of no permits needed for building. I bought this ten acres and 3 moblie homes owner finaced will have it paid off in 11 more years. The Mark Twain forest is all around me so lots of wildlife. The man I bought from has a few more lots he is trying to sell.Best of all is the Dora school its small and the teachers are great and care about each kid, paula

Lawrence County here, not quite as many rocks as where we lived between West Plains & Ava. You definitely want something for the ticks (guineas, ducks or chickens). Apples seem to grow really well here. Honestly, the best thing I've found so far is just the shear number of folks who are homesteading in the area - it makes it a lot easier to have someone to ask where they get sheep feed from when the feed store guy goes, "Range maggots? Whadya wanna feed them for?" (just kidding )

I live in stone county outside of Galena, MO and really would not live anywhere else. Love the property i bought and all the people that i have met around me. I live close enough to Springfield that i can get whatever i need and Branson is only 15 miles away too.

I've live in South Missouri most my life.Lived in California,Colorado,Arkansas, and Louisiana.Wouldn't trade all them for Southern Missouri.
Most I've seen that come from out of state either couldn't handle either the humidity or the cold.

We are about as far south in Missouri as you can get- I can throw a rock within 100 yards of Arkansas if I stand at the southern edge of our 80 acres. We are in Ozark County, low taxes, no building permits, good neighbors (the closest is about a quarter mile away). We live about 2 1/2 miles from the nearest paved road on a limestone ridge. Yes we do have a few rocks (most larger than the average car but smaller than the average house) but there is a little soil in between them. Been here since '99, wouldn't live any where else. DW and I both work in Mountain Home Arkansas just to get a decent wage. We use chickens, ducks and guineas for tick and chigger control but still have the odd tarantula wander into the house in the summer time. (one of our few visitors) Just a little piece of Heaven!!

Laclede County, 17 miles south of Lebanon and a good long walk from Competition. We have 12 acres and will be living there full time come this summer when I retire officially. Hope to finally finish the house we have been building for 6 years now. Good neighbors, cheap power compared to Illinois and good living all around. And Ive only had two ticks in the six years Ive been going to SW Missouri and we are seldom troubled by Chiggers or skeeters. its a great place to live.

Just south of Branson. "You can tell how long someone has been gardening by how tall their rock wall is." I've been here 17 years. Love the lakes, the access to great hiking areas, and the roadrunners that run through my back yard.

I live in SW Missouri also. The worst things about Missouri (and I love Missouri totally) are most of the things folks have already mentioned --- ticks, chiggers, tornadoes, ice storms (this last winter was a doozy), horrible humidity in the summer, and rocks (southern MO). Other than those, Missouri is great, and very beautiful.
Politically and spiritually speaking, I would say southern Missouri is more conservative than not.
