It's out of here. I'm not fencing off an area for ants.

Hey crashy what are the big black ones?
They keep coming in the house.
Drive me nuts but the cats think
they're great entertainment.
I think they bite to cause sometimes
the cats jump back like they've been bit.
Might want to find out if those are carpenter ants or not...see previous post http://homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=85154

Big black ones here are carpenter ants. They love rotting wood -- should see how they were swarming my ailing basswood tree! But they also got into the house, so we had to do two things: 1.) find the nest to destroy it, and 2.) repair the rotted wood.

They were so bad that they actually crawled on our bed -- OOGY!!! <shudder>

Pony!

nope, no fire ants in this part of tn. however, i was bitten by a pile of them last time i was on the sc coast.

btw- just because they are red/ black does not mean they are fire ants.

hmmm... first time i've been called an ant- hugger! LOL!! i just like to let the wild things live and let live.

The big black ones are carpenter ants and they have these things called mandibles (sp?) and they pinch!!! I had a dog that used to eat them one day he was really looking sad and shaking his head I looked in his mouth and there were these ants heads in his tongue!! I had to get tweezers to pull them off and they made him bleed.
They don't eat wood but they will nest in it and its a mess. You should be seeing them flying around about now and if you look around where you seen em there should be brownish wings laying around...the beat thing that you can to for them is to STOMP on em.

Lots & lots of diatomaceous earth works great. Doesn't harm the soil and is not expensive. Good luck.

A gallon of gas is equal to a half case of dynamite in explosive power. Dynamite is 50 pounds per case. The trick to a good expolsion is to contain the explosive so that it has resistance. For instance packing it down a tight hole in the ground and then setting it off.

The industry does produce a stick of dynamite that weighs 25 pounds, and is sold two sticks per case. this stick is equal to a gallon of gas. It is 5.5 inches wide and 25 inches long, made for strip mines. This 5.5X25 might also work on anthills, who knows?

...........It might be kinda neat to experiment , You Know , find 2 equally large mounds , Drill a Uniform Diameter hole to say 5 feet of depth . Insert 1 stick of TNT into hole #1 with the Appropriate detonator attached , then have Big Rockpile pour 'Zactly one gallon of Iraqi refined 93 octane(george Approved gas) down hole #2 and Let BRP drop a Match down said Hole and RUN like Hell !!@! ....Then set off TNT in Hole #1 .......As , each group of Ants is being Rocketed into the Air and taking into account the Preveiling wind direction and Speed One might beable to calculate the Approximate Distribution of Ants from each Hole By counting them as They deploy their parachute(s) and slowly descend to Terra Firma looking for Some to STING . OH! the Thrill of the Chase never leaves Us , fordy... :yeeha:
