A good tractor doesn't have to be expensive. Look around or search the net for Ford 800 series and up. The Jubilee and 8N got popular and too expensive. I got a totally rebuilt 801, new paint and all, 43hp --- $3200 and she is a workhorse. That Ford will float through mud and snow that will stop an ATV cold.

I bought a 1948 Farmall Cub Tractor several years ago and paid $1600 for it and a finishing mower. Since then I bought a bottom plow, 6' disc, a one row rotery hoe and a 6' drag rack all for $900. The tractor never has to be choked just hit the starter and she cranks right up. I can run all day on one and one half gallons of gas. I have a huge garden that I would not be able to have without the tractor. To me this is the cheapest way to go.

I'm not trying to be rude by saying this but people that don't own a ATV or know to much about them shouldn't be commenting about them.

First point: A tractor has been around forever. They out pull and out lift any ATV.
Second point: You can not "burn" up a clutch on a ATV unless its a hand clutch and there only on sport bikes. Utility atvs use either a belt clutch (automatic), Hydrostatic (Automatic) or a plate clutch that automaticly engages.
Third point: Atvs are not made to replace the tractor.
Fourth: Atvs have fat, wide tires and spread out the weight. They do less damage to the ground then a tractor does.
Fifth: If you want to haul a large load with a atv buy a set of ITP Tractor tires made for an atv. They have the same thread as a tractor and though they can haul more, they still keep up with a tractor.

Lets talk new: New Tractor: $20,000 for a good model. New ATV: $6000 for a good model.

Its about your own choice. I'm going to be using my bike to haul wood around, fishing, hunting and doing yard work. I will eventually get a tractor to do the heavy jobs.

Sorry for the long time away. I was cutting firewood last night and most of today.

I kinda thought that the comments would be what they where.

The ATV stuff looks great but the tractor will out work it in the long run.
That was just the info needed. I just don't like to throw good money after bad. I prefer to buy it once and have it last.

So it seems I'm only lookin at tractors for a while.

Thanks very much for the help with this.

An ATV is one of those things that once you get it you wonder how you ever got along without it. It can't replace a tractor in most circumstances nor can a tractor do what an ATV can. An ATV many times can do work for you in places you can't or shouldn't use a tractor.

For my purposes I would need and ATV first. A tractor is necessary later. (at the moment badly needed) Yes, I can spread gravel on my driveway with an ATV with a blade or bucket but a tractor with a FEL could do it faster. The ATV is more nimble and is easier to push snow with as the tractor is too clumsy in tight areas around the house. On the other hand I can take my ATV over to the south 40 (yeah I actually have a south 40) today pretty easily and haul logs, mow paths and cut brush but you could never get a tractor over there as wet as it is.

If you don't have heavier chores to do an ATV may be just fine. Once you start needing to do the heavier chores a tractor is more efficient and will do a better job.

I'm without both at the moment and feel thoroughly crippled. The truck just won't do the same jobs as a tractor or 4x4 ATV. Also for first time ATV buyers make sure you get a 4x4 model and make sure it has a LOCKING front differential. The others are in my experience as worthless as teats on a bull in muddy or rugged conditions.

We have and USE both an ATV and a small tractor with attachments. Dont think we could get along without either one!

My parents have a Gator they use for manure.

I saw the Kubota RTV (i think) anyway those are sooooo cool!!!

I'd start with a tractor, then get an ATV. jmo
