We have had one for 5 years and have our two field bred springers. I love it because we only want it to deter them, not to absolutely keep them in. We are 1000 ft. off the road, so we have the luxury of mistakes. My oldest dog who is five will cross occassionally if a gun goes off too close, but I know that and can keep her in by reminding her when it happens. The 3 yo has thicker fur and knows her boundaries, but will cross over the edge at will if I let her. I never let either out without me being out with them. They will ignore deer and squirrels when they are past their line. It is not fool proof, but works for us. If you just want to let your dog out without supervision I would get something else. My lab who didn't have a fence would continually visit my neighbors beagle in his run right next to our line, but these two have never seen cousin Sparky!! It depends on how you use it, I guess. We have the Petsafe one, paid about $300 and put the wire in ourselves in one afternoon (2acres). We rented an edger to do the job.
