Why use a lawyer?

1) to sue for child support if needed
2) to find out what legal rights she has
3) to refer her to people who might be able to help her

The latter two could also be done by a social worker, free of charge.

I don't want to appear to be unsympathetic. But we don't know this woman and it seems like you're asking for money for her. I have given out of my onw need to help long time members on this board. To ask for money for someone we don't even know seems very persumptious to me. I am currently homeless (well, living in one room with my 2 daughters and a cat at my sister's house). I scrimped together money to buy owner financed land and have to move in 4 weeks, as my sister is getting re-married and moving to their new home. I have exactly $1.00 left out of today's paycheck and have bills due and overdue. I don't even have the money to buy a tent and sleeping bags and unless something works out, we will literally be living on the land in our car. I have been a member here for years, back when it was the old forum and I haven't asked anyone here for money. What does she need to do? Call on the government of which she pays taxes and use the services and programs they have available. She shouldn't need our help to do that. When you see something going on here like we are doing for Hears the Water, it's because we have a relationship with those people. We are not here to help every hard luck case. If so, we have enough of those already here to help from now to dooms day. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but it's really rubbing me the wrong way.
