About 900 square feet for the two of us humans, two cats, and a dog. When I'm trying to get the woodstove to heatthe place up and it's -30 outside, I wish it was only 100 square feet
We spend most of our time outside though, or in the barn, and see the house only as a shelter for cooking/sleeping/bathing etc. No fancy dining rooms or living rooms that nobody uses. Don't need any exercise rooms, get enough exercise working outside.

We currently have a 1674 sq. ft. cape that we are selling. I am hoping to get
that or a little more in our next house. We are a family of four and this size
house has been perfect, but as the kids grow to be as big as dad, i would like to have a little more space or atleast bigger community rooms like the LV and kitchen. Also, we want to have it more open as opposed to me being off in the distance while cooking. Don't forget closets!

I will say this house has been big enough for us and we actually play tag on those winter days going through kitch, DR, LV!

We also have two cats that live with us - one being the size of a small dog.

Our house sounds very much like debitaber's. A 1905 2 1/2 story Victorian with 12 rooms including 2 parlors, dining room, 2 finished attic rooms, big kitchen, 2 stairways, 3 season porch, full unfinished basement and a wrap around front porch. There's just the two of us with one dog and four cats. We used to live in a 2 bedroom with one tiny bath (less than 1000 sq ft) and that was too small for us. Our home now is probably too big for us (a lot of times I have to go in search of DH!) but we do have a lot of stuff! With a bigger home, there's lots of room to work on projects but the problems with a bigger house are cleaning it, heating it, and maintaining it!

3200 square feet old farmhouse. Two adults, two kids (8 & 16). I admit we live in a bout 1/2 that space and the rest is full of junk.

I've come to the conclusion that my perfect house would have to be a log cabin with a victorian turret. ROFL!
(I don't actually want a turret ...but all the floor plans I like seem to have'em.)

My perfect plan would include:
-Master suite with a killer bathroom, sittting area, and huge walkin closets.
-Art studio
-Laundry room CLOSE TO BEDROOMS
-Nice kitchen with a breakfast room on one end and a keeping room on the other end. (Personally I don't need a livingroom.)
-Kids bedrooms with jack-and-jill bath in between.
-Formal dining room (just for grandma's furniture)

Here's the absolute best plans I have found:

I believe you're asking the wrong questions. I don't believe it matters what others do. Here's what I needed to ask myself:

Is this going to be a place to eat/sleep or am I a nester?
What's my lifestyle? (lots of friends/family visiting or just me)
Do I like living in small spaces or large?
Am I willing to get rid of all my "stuff"?
What is my money situation?
Do I want off grid or on?
Do I want two story or one?
How many functional rooms do I think I need?
What kind of storage do I need/want?
What would I be willing to sacrifice if I couldn't have "it all"?
I could go on & on, but you get the idea. This is a real comittment!

Me? 1700 sq ft 3 bdr. 2 ba. for one & 1 dog- now there's 2 and 3 dogs. We need one more large room for his room (computer, hobbies, etc) Winter is too muddy to do much outside, so we're housebound a lot.

1 1/2 story farm house (ca. 1900) with 3 bedrooms, one bath, 7 total rooms. Four of us, 2 cats and 1 dog live there. We have very little storage space, the basement is too wet, there is no attic. No closets -- we have eave storage, but it is not very efficient to use. On the positive side, we have lots of windows and natural light, large front porch and a side porch. I know others live in smaller spaces, but in addition to a second bathroom, I would dearly love to have some type of family room where my kids could spread out. However, reading the posts of folks who live in less than 1000 sq ft I feel guilty wishing for more space!

1870 sq. feet. 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom. Only 3 of us living here right now ( and 4 kitties) . Its a 150 yr old farm house that used to be a two story years ago before they "topped" it. Really could use that extra space now and then!

We just started building a simple single story house that will be 1883 sq ft of heated space. 4 Bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths. The 1/2 bath is off the utility, so it can be gotten to from the garage. So no more tracking up the carpets. There will be two adults, one toddler (and Lord willing, another one - or two - by the end of the year ) Two large dogs and a cat.

The 4th bedroom will actually be my office as I work from home. It will be completely baby proofed and have only my computer airmoire and a mattress on the floor. That way I can work and baby can play without my having to worry and when I need to nap (being pg and keeping up with a 1 yr old wipes me out!) I can nap with the baby on the mattress without worry that she will fall off the bed if she wakes up before me.

Currently we are living in a semi converted barn that is about 500 sq ft. The house is going to feel like a mansion when we are finally able to move in a few months from now. Our toddler is going to think she has found the promised land with all the room to roam around in!

Thanks for all the great replys! I think we're going to go with a 12x16 cabin for now untill we build are house in 2 years.

For the house we're thinking about 24x20. It's only going to be the two of us with only a few people visiting. Plus we could use the cabin as a guest house if need be.

Thanks
Danny

Our home is designed like an old barn. The main area is 20 x 32 with 14 ft high walls that allows for a 16 x 20 loft that looks down over the living area. We have 1 bedroom downstairs and the loft serves as the guest bedroom and home office. The "bump outs" on each side of the main area are 10 ft wide. The side with the kitchen and laundry is 10 x 24 and on the bedroom side, it is 10 x 16 that makes our bedroom nice and large allowing for a sitting area and large closet. Then we have a 10 ft deep covered deck porch that goes all around 3 sides. We have one large bath downstairs. There are no hallways. We put in wide doorways with french or pocket doors so the downstairs is wheelchair friendly. We opted out for a tub in the downstairs bath which allowed for a 6 x 4 roll in shower. We will have a soaking/hot tub outside. We plumbed for an outside shower with hot/cold water to bathe the dogs and to shower when we have been out in the woods. Our house has about 1300 sq ft inside and another 1000 sq ft in porches and decks. Our land is not flat and so when laying out the foundation, we ended up with a 16 x 10 walkout basement plus substantial head room in the crawlspace. That has allowed extra storage and a root cellar.

When the kids and family come and visit, their only complaint is that they wish there was a 1/2 bath upstairs. Baths and kitchens are expensive and we decided that putting the money into one large, nice bath was better than money into 2 small cheap baths. Our choice for our circumstances.

3600 square feet, including the apartment that currently houses just Grandma but used to house Grandpa as well. Six people - seventh expected in Nov., 3 adults, three children at present. We have lived in much, much, much less, but like having the extra space in our drafty old farmhouse.

:haha: I completely AGREE!!

In my home: 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 german shepards, 1 cat, and 4 kittens in a 1400sq ft home. I still feel like I have too much house to keep up with!!

My home is 36x24, so 864 sq. ft. There are 3 of us here now, it is awfully crowded. I long for more space!

Our cabin is 12'x24' with a 12'by12' sleeping loft....432s.f. That is for 2 adults and 2 children. It is cozy. Too small for company, but fine for us. We need an outside storage shed, though, and then it'd be perfect.

My uncle's cabin is 16'x24' and it feels alot roomier inside. I think our house is too narrow feeling, but we wanted open ceilings, and since we aren't builders, were erring on the safe side. If we ever build again, I'm going to do 16'by 24'.

We had 1250 sq. ft. But we are about done with the new addition that has added another 650 sq. ft. Addopted the girls and started running out of room fast around here. Now got 1900sq.ft.
