[QUOTE=Jen H]For home protection, the 12 guage is under the bed. 3 am the window breaks, husband's out of town, dogs going nuts, can't find my glasses, adrenaline is just pumping - I can point the shotgun at the doorway and take out anything in it. Including the door itself.QUOTE]

Good God, I hope the husband doesn't come home early, discover he has lost his key, and try to climb in the window

Because we have guns in the house, if either of us is coming home unexpectedly we call ahead. We also have "safe words" we yell out. In fact, our extended family knows those "safe words" in case they ever need to come out unexpectedly.

Our bedroom is an upstairs loft with one open wall, so there's no problem hearing people talking downstairs.

No sneaking in to try to not wake the other person up around here. The law's too far away and the meth labs are too close.

Yup,

If you are smart you let friends and family know that you have guns and not to come for social calls at 2 in the morning without a call first.

Second, you don't have to push the slide release on your shotgun if you first "UNLOADED" pull the trigger. This will allow the slide to move without having to push the little slide release thingie. This is how I keep mine.

Buy an SKS.
Short, easy to aim and in general will dust man or beast.

avoid the cheap yugoslavian ones as they didnt chrome their barrels and they need more and careful cleanings.

study this page;
http://www.simonov.net/uberfaq.htm

once you practice with one for a few 100 rounds, you will be able to reasonably aim and hit something pretty quickly.
