Yes. We're lucky with Goldie cause he doesn't bother us at all at mealtime. He gets to clean dishes and then they go into the dishwasher.

My mother used to tell dinner guests our dishes were the cleanest in town..."They were cleaned by three rivers".....the guests would usually say but there is only the stream in the back yard......"Come here Three Rivers!" she'd yell....and the dog would come running eventhough it wasn't his name....His name was Chewy..and he liked chewy meat leftovers!

Oh, my Buster is the world's biggest kitchen helper! He licks up things that fall on the floor, he does the deep-cleaning on the pots and pans... We scrape the dishes into his dish, though. I'd forget them on the floor if we gave him all the plates.
Even if we didn't have a dishwasher, my wash water is still so hot that it reduces grown men to tears!

Of course! It's never even occurred to me not to. I mean, why let that food go to waste? The dogs want to eat it and I want to get rid of it. It's the natural order of things between dog and man and probably has been for thousands of years.
Honestly, I can't even imagine why someone wouldn't give the plate to the dog unless it has some kind of special dietary restrictions.
This sounds awful, but my dogs had filet mignon for breakfast today. We cooked it last night and had leftovers but we forgot to put it in the fridge before going to bed. I would have eaten it anyway but my wife insisted that I mustn't. So three very lucky dogs ate extremely well today.

No way. Our Border Collie runs around in the corral all day eating afterbirth, old dried up bull cods, cattle snot and fresh cow pies. I don't think I'd be wanting him anywhere near my dishes even if they go in the dishwasher and I for sure don't want him licking my face. :yeeha: Marilyn, the farmer's wife........

After I scrape off all the leftovers for the ratties, our horrid beast of a dog gets to lick the gravey or whatever. The dishwasher does do a good of sanitizing stuff, ya know

jack-c-ville: the food doesn't go to waste, they eat it out of their bowls and not mine. When I had chickens they got some scraps in their yard but not off my plates either.

But of course the dog gets to lick the plate... but its been a bearcat to teach her to put them in the cupboard after she is done.
The cats even get a bowl once inawhile, and the chickens run the cats outta the bowl if they think it has some potential for them..... it gets washed when it comes in from the barn though.... cause it was sitting on dirt.

We always let our dogs clean the plates when I was growing up. However, I don't have a dog at my place yet. My cat does a good job cleaning the plates though (which might be why she's a bit overweight ) She's very good about waiting until the plate's on the floor, and won't touch them if I set them on the coffee table next to her. She does get impatient when I'm eating ice cream bars or popsicles (her favorite) and I have to fend her off.

only when i have dinner guest. No almost always, my GSDs are very patient. As for " dog germs" , thats what soap and hot water are for. Considering some of the toxic/ plain nasty things i have worked with in my life, dog slobber wouldnt even concern me a little.

Our dog gets to lick the plates sometimes. If she begs too much while we're eating, then she doesn't get any. But if she's good and just lays down near us then I make sure to give her the plate to lick afterward. We weren't going to feed her any "people food", but DH's mom started doing it, so we figure the damage is done. She's usually pretty good about not begging. When we eat at the table (which is very rarely--only when company comes and sometimes not even then) she usually lays down at my feet while we eat.
I do have friends that refuse to eat off of a dish that a dog has eaten off of. I just figure, it's been washed, so what's the big deal?

Yeah, I must sheepishly admit that I did. Of course those dishes would get scalded and washed well.
I actually have a plastic serving bowl that has my dear departed labby's teeth marks in it. (he was always a chewer-probably died of termites) It always makes me smile when I notice it.
Ok, it makes me tear up a little too but don't tell anyone.

Never, Left-overs are Mine!
Hi Y'all,
Well, mostly the left-overs are mine, for lunch, next day.
Unless there's enough fo another meal, for the 2 of us.
My dogs never get people food. They get "Neutro"
dogfood & doggie treats, rawhide bones, biscuits & such.
They are taught NOT to beg. When we are eating, they go lay
on their blankets in the corner.
I had the same "Rules" years ago, when I had a Scot Terrier.
And later, when I had two big retired Greyhounds.
Now that I have Dobermans it's the same. I've had them ALL
indoors. They know the "rules of the House"
I guess they are not the regular"Homestead dog", I "work with them".

River, the dog, has his treats every night when dinner is winding down. He gets to clean the plates, pans, whatever his little snout can get into. I vowed never to feed my dog table scraps, but when we brought him home as a little bitty puppty he did an amazing feat. My dh was on the sofa eating a piece of fried chicken and River did a flying leap up - grab the piece of chicken mid-air from dh's hand - angle back down and the ran to a corner to eat his prize. We couldn't stop laughing because he lept probably 3' and this guy was like 6 pounds and tiny. That did it. I couldn't say no to such a determined little furball. Now, we just train him to lay down to get his treat from the table. He didn't do the flying leap trick again. But, he is VERY accomplished in theivery. heheeheheee

If your afraid of dog germs, you will never make it as a homesteader..........as far as training, I can take food from any of my dogs mouths. I have on more than one occation grabed my food back from the dog that nabbed while I turned away, and ate it myself.....

i hear ya, thumper. the reason my dogs mind me so well, and would never dream of touching a feather of a chicken is bcause they know i am top dog. when one of them grabbed my sandwich off the kitchen counter when my back was turned, i cornered him, and sat on him, and took it back. he never did it again.
others have said it, now i agree. i see the point you were trying to make.

Hi Thumper & Y'all,
Pretty bad when you have to quarrel with the dogs for your food.
Different Folks have different "house rules" I guess.
Nope, I'm not afraid of dog germs. But, think about where their mouths
have been. I don't let them kiss me on the mouth either.
And, I'm making it as a retiree, not worried about making it as a
Homesteader.
I love my dogs as much as anyone. I spent about $4000 on one of
my Dobies last year, when he had his knee ligaments all blown out.
He's worth it.
But, Nope, I don't share my food with them. I don't eat out of their
bowls either. We respect each other, hunnh.
Have a good-un

Hi~
we have let our dogs eat from our plates/bowls/pans but they know the rules
last week my near 4yo daughter left a burrito on a plate in the middle of the living room floor and none of the 3 dogs touched it....now if it had been set in the corner of the kitchen or outside it woulda been toast!
our 4th dog can't come inside anymore because 1. we couldn't housebreak him and 2. he would snitch food from right in front of you...even with correction it would still occur
we have a mixed breed (mostly pomeranian), vizla, 1/2 Amer Eskimo 1/2 Samoyed, and the "we-don't-know-what"....he is marked like a Dobbie, bulky like a rottie, and smaller than our pom mix
our vizla thinks he is beta...you know hubby is alpha, dog thinks he is beta making me Charlie! :haha:  ....this has been hard to change!

I must admit that my cats have been known to lick up some milk out of my cereal bowl whilst I am still eating... Doesn't bother me much but since I know other people are offended I'll boot the cat away when they are around.
I have a friend whose neighbor's kept "dropping in" on Sunday right about time for supper. They were to nice to send them on their way and kept just inviting them to dinner until one day they had had enough. The husband sent her wife into do the dishes and she called the dog. She let the dog lick the plates clean and proceeded to just place them directly into the cupboard. The neighbors never dropped by on a Sunday 'round suppertime again!
I love this story. Just wish I had been there to see the look on these folks faces.
