I found the wood cookstove on Tradio for $100 quite a few years ago. It's an old white Home Comfort, with the water holder & oven too. It took every friend we had to help bring it home. We have never had A/C here, and I hardly ever use the range in the kitchen in the summer. Steve made a concrete pad for it, and he brought home from work lots of metal studs for the wall frame. Then we just use metal sheets for sides. Nothing wood. I am thinking an old sliding glass door (have one) would be nice to let lots of light in to see, even if it's a bit chilly out.

At 10 am & 6 pm, Tradio comes on the country music station. You can call in with what you have to trade, want, sell, etc. It's cool. We found an upright woodstove, a Warm Morning, the really old barrel type cast iron ones with legs, for $25. That pup is really heavy. I have another black square woodstove with the optional screen door, out in the garden, for my outdoor evening sitting pleasure. You know all the home improvement stores are selling those outdoor firepits now.

Thanks Rosemary, I keep looking. Diane, where are they talking about rocks? I love rocks. Rocks are one of my neat favorite stuff.

Topaz, I took Beanie Baby outside today and she followed me everywhere, touching my leg at all times. Funny, in the pasture, the mama sheep, she is tame, just looked at me, and then at my baby, and at me again. She was stumped for sure! She even smelled of it, but no, it wasn't hers. Too funny. All the goat mama's with their kids, the ewe's with theirs, and then me with mine. I was walking around and thru them with my big baby lamb following me just to give them all a look. Bean wasn't too sure about those big animals, she is used to the house and the BC's.

Hi everyone
I, like most of you, have been so blessed to find THIS forum. I have quite a few irons in the fire, but I don't know a lot of people here that actually ENJOY gardening, animals, family and yes their hubbies.

My 10ds had a friend over a couple of weeks ago while we were getting one of the raised beds ready for my onions, spinach and mustard. He said "You know, MY family just goes to Wal-Mart and BUYS food" :haha: I thought that was too cute....he couldn't imagine that we were doing this out of enjoyment.

Anyway, I'm here in northern Mississippi. The weather has been good some days and cold others. I've already planted onions (doing fine), mustard greens (just now coming up), spinach(can't see a trace of it), carrots (same as spinach), lettuce (baby greens and purples...yum), and potatoes (nothing yet). We also bought 21 blueberry bushes this winter and they are starting to bud. I went to my Dad's hunting land and gathered 8 muscadine vines to root (their just starting to show signs of life). We've never done so much in the winter, but it's been a few years since I wasn't pregnant or nursing and felt like getting out in the cold. It's been great!

I'm so glad to find some "sisters" w/ kindred spirits. I'm finding myself coming to the "fence" often.

OOOOHHH, last but not least. I was in the library the other day picking up books for the kids and ran across some books on farm stories of the "good ole days". I have found these VERY enjoyable and interesting. Just thought I'd share. And my age (since you all shared) is 34.

Cindy, I can't even find the rock thread now. This place has gotten so big that you can lose things fast. A fellow was asking about using the rocks on the place he just bought for foundations when building. Since my place "grows" more rocks than anything else I was following the discussion.

Well..........the sun is actually shining here and the temperature is above freezing so I plan to shove myself right away from the computer and go outside and play!!!! I have so many branches down from ice etc., fruit trees to prune and dormant spray, chicken coop to clean before it gets hot and stinky and just plain indulge in the sounds of spring. The robins are squawking all over the place today.

Sun shining here again today. I am on my son's computer while my little granddaughter is taking a nap.

I am getting a load of mushroom compost tomorrow for my square foot garden areas. We will be hauling sand and topsoil from my dad's place. He had piled up quite a bit with his dozer. We will have to shovel it onto a trailer as dad has all his heavy equipment in West Texas.

My dad is almost 76 and still running a bulldozer and other equipment. I guess we will find him one day passed on while working. He just won't quit. He can out work men half his age. I guess it keeps him young. He is in pretty good health for someone who was first a horse trainer and then started his dozing business.

The coyotes were wild last night. They were just over our east fence. Every time I would drop off to sleep they would start howling again.

Have a blessed day all!
Rosemary

YOO! HOO! Where are y'all?

We are supposed to have scattered thunderstorms here today. I just hope they are scattered somewhere else.

Hubby will be home from work around noon. We will be building our square foot garden areas out of cinder blocks. I will have to call the man about delivering the mushroom compost.

What will y'all be doing this weekend? I pray for good weather for us all and plenty of time to do the things we want to do this weekend.

Blessings,

Rosemary

Yoo Hoo to you too! Got spring fever big time here, don't even want to come back in long enough to eat. I come in a get my coffee, and check the board, and run back out. I am going to fill up about 40 stacked tires (from the raided barn) today with black, black mulch from last years goat barn cleanout. Yummy! And I have some Rose of Sharon trees, about as tall as me I have to find a place for, they are in the bucket of water waiting to see their new home, wherever that ends up to be. ?? Steve got me a flat of Pansies, purple, yipee, first flowers of the spring.

Diane, that thread is about boulders. I thought you meant rocks, like rock collecting. But I like the bolders too. Not as easy to collect in a bucket, you'd need an over-the-sholder-bolder-holder to get them home. he he

Rain mixed with sleet here I am so glad that I totally ignored everything else yesterday and spent 6 hours outside. I had my winter hat and coat on, but the sun was shining and it was just so glorious to be outside. The robins were hopping around and the bluebirds were singing. I got the asparagus patch all cleaned off, cleaned a couple of nesting boxes and put the litter on my roses and pruned a few fruit trees. FINALLY, after many attempts we are having fruit trees survive. We have lost every dwarf we have ever started to rabbits or deer or whatever. This time we used good welded wire fencing and made cages for all of them so no rabbit or deer can even get close to them. They ALL survived the winter!!! Guess I will do some sewing, ironing and cooking ahead today........spring is coming.......I just know it is!!!! Have a great weekend all.

NativeRose I don’t think I ate anything different that night, I think it was a combination of seeing my neighbor’s paint mare and new foal, and playing with the chickies. Would your Dad be close to Abilene by any chance? We are going to be needing some dozer work done.

Momofmany I help my Hubby build, but have never done it on my own. If I had to, I am not past giving it a try.

LittleBit hope that you are feeling better by now.

Cindy how about a picture of your outdoor kitchen. please. Aww how cute, I can just picture you and your baby amongst all the goats and sheep.

One thing we are going to do is get the rest of those meat chickens butchered, come your know what or high water. Don’t have to worry about the high water here.

Took Gin and Lena out to hand graze some yesterday, they sure did enjoy it. Then had them stand tied for a spell. Need to tie Gin more, she paws, in fact I thought at one time I saw a little Chinaman pop up. If it is nice today I think I’ll take my yearling, Cameo, out to eat grass.

Oh........I forgot to say a big HELLO to Littlebit..........nice to "see" you again. I have been under the weather quite a bit myself this winter and haunting the forum more than usual. Over on Melissa's forum I "saw" John from S.Ind. and Joel for the first time in a long time as well. Kind of like old home week I still miss Doreen though

Wow- I never realized how many folks here on the board are from TEXAS! Are the bugs really bigger there? LOL Up here in Montana the bugs are big, the trees are big and the forest fires are big. We have some snow on the ground today , about 9 inches. But this is the first snow since Christmas and the ground was bare and muddy till this last storm. We are very very worried about forest fires, our fire season begings in June and the whole community is already talking about where they will go when they need to evacuate. Personally, I am not leaving my home! I waited all my life to live on top of this mountain, have a few hens and some fruit trees, and I am not about to just walk away and give it over to a forest fire! I have been thinning pine trees for the past 4 years and have the area around the house and outbuildings cleared pretty well for about 400 feet. If that is not enough I will take down more trees, need some pasture anyway. Hope you are all having a great spring, I know I will once spring comes to these parts!

Let's se...tody we went shopping as a family, filled out and delivered party invitations with my sone for his birthday, kids played with friends, I cooked dinner, and I will work on the dishes before bed.

Tomorrow, eat breakfast with my daughter, go shopping for her very own pet, eat lunch with DH (just the 2 of us! ) , we MUST do some yard work, and then we MIGHT have a few hours off.

Spring break is over tomorrow: too bad. Back to the old grind of homework and arrangements.

Monday will be scouts, Wednesday my DD's birthday, Karate and girl scouts Thurseday, Friday my son's birthday sleepover, and Sunday is of course Easter.

Well where did Spring go to?? The other week was soo nice and now its all cold and grey. At least we missed the two foot of snow they got to the North of us in MN. The Mrs (okay me) would be envious of your raided barnjunk. We've been scooping out another barn but they burnt it down yesterday! Two new calves one bull one heifer, the bad cow had to have a heifer ugh. Really impatient about this warm weather and sunshine and lack of. The wife has started her "therapy job" at a greenhouse so she gets her dose. I took a hike through the woods and nothing popping up yet. I really like the outdoor stove idea, now if I could get it out of the basement. Actually I think the parlor stove woulld be great in the garden. I'm going to surprise the Mrs with that one. It has been almost a year since I quite my good job to struggle at the farm, but It will work out. So nice to be home rather than comuting 140 miles a day (esp. at 2.00 gas!!) I waiitng for the chicken orders and plaanting then officially spring will be here.

It's Spring in OK. The Bartlett pear trees & others are blooming. The weeds in my back yard need mowing. We're having daytime highs in the 60s & nightime lows in the high 30s & 40s. Around the corner are thunderstorms & tornados.

bgak47 Thunderstorms and Tornadoes OH MY!! Hubby and I lived in Broken Arrow for 3 years and became very familiar with the tornado season. We had to take cover on more than one occasion. I really liked Oklahoma except for the tornadoes each spring. I hope you have wonderful weather and NO torandoes this year or any other year. It seems the weather patterns here in my part of Texas are becoming as bad. We had quite a thunderstorm with very violent lightening last night.

Take care and prayerfully no tornadoes for anyone this year.

Cindy in Ky I spent yesterday outside until it was almost dark and the thunderstorm ran me in. I and Hubby are so sore from lifting, digging and hauling that I am creeping around this morning. But it sure feels good and when I look out and see how much we got done yesterday I just grin :haha:
