Jeff,
That's what we thought a few years ago. They still think it might be in some bison and elk, and that it could come to infect cattle. I recall reading that late in 2003, they found brucellosis in herds of cattle in TX, WY, AND MT.

I have problems digesting cow's milk, so I drink goat's milk. A family nearby keeps saanens, and I buy my milk from them.
Hubby really prefers cow's milk. He drinks the 2%.
Goat's milk does have a different taste and texture than cow's milk does. The goat milk you buy at the grocery store is just horrible stuff. Fresh goat's milk doesn't have the sour, off flavors the store bought goat milk does. It still does taste different from cow's milk - not better or worse, just different. I think goat milk tastes a little more like herbs than cow's milk does.

If cooled imediately. And from a clean barn(milk takes on odors easily) my grand kids don't know the difference from cows milk and ask for more!
Lamanchas(currantly milk 4 to 6) have a sweet tasting milk at least compared to my Nube.
If I have to I buy raw cows milk from a non organic dairy 2:60 A gal.
Pasturized milk has all the good bugs our gut needs killed.Raw has the bugs that make natural antibiotics to keep our immune system healthy. Goats have naturally homogenized milk!
Homogenized has the fat globules broken up too small and zanthian oxidase goes through intestine walls before it gets to where nature intended it to go.And ends up attatching to artery walls leading to arterial sclerosis and heart disease.
Milking is fun too, my cats line up for a squirt when I'm in the mood

I drink cows milk from the store. Usually whole but sometimes 2%. I've been thinking about getting a cow but being single I have no idea what I would do with that much milk. If I had kids I would have a cow or two no doubt. Milk is so expensive in the store now. I've been contemplating getting a goat or two for milk but haven't made up my mind yet.

Quint,
Good advice given is to keep at least two goats as they need the company, otherwise keeping only one goat will make you part of the herd and create problems keeping them contained. Being single and having two goats or a cow is still a good idea if you use the milk to feed other animals such as chickens or a pig. Mix it with feed. That's a good way I would utilize excess milk that you couldn't consume on your own.

On this topic When you milk a Cow do you have to do anything to the milk once it comes out of the cow. Or can you just drink up and how long does it last if you where to put it in the fridg? I've been wanting to ask this question for some time now and the same for goats milk? As I plan to get some of each when we move in a few years. Thanks for the info in advance Matt

To me, goat milk is not as heavy tasting as cow milk but still has plenty of the creamy feel to it.

Wow, I hadn't heard that. If brucellosis is back, we could have serious problems in the dairy industry. Do you have any more information about this, or remember where you read it?

I can't tell you about goats, but here is what happens in a commercial dairy for cows....
First, wash udder and teats. (We use clorohexadine {spelling?}) dry udder and teats. wait about 45 seconds, then put milker on. After milking, dip teats with a protective solution.
The milk goes to the bulk tank, and is cooled to 37 degrees F. Then we drink!
Of course, the milk shipped to the cooperative is then pasturized.

Don't like it much
Silk soya milk.
In general I don't like any milk. I would rather, and do when I can, put blueberry juice on my cereal.
We had -- well, we developed -- the largest dairy farm in northern BC thirty years ago; even then I only drank milk out of the bulk tank on a hot day when I was haying -- it was cold, and I was hot. Still I didn't like it that much.
Now because soya milk apparently has something in it that is better than the apparently good stuff in cows’ milk, Nancy wants us to drink Silk. It's OK.
It's just that I don't care for any milk, sorry, Dairy Farms of America and Canada.
However, the best thing about milk is the amazing animals it comes from. I (we) loved our Holsteins. They are the most wonderful and gentle animals.
I still don't like milk, love cows.
Alex

The only thing I do with my goats' milk after it comes out of the goat is strain it with a milk filter, and put it in the fridge to cool. It will last about a week before it gets an off taste. It can still be made into yogurt or soft cheese though.
What goes on BEFORE the milk comes out is more important. Healthy, well fed, clean animals make better milk. Brushing off and washing the udder before milking and a teat dip after milking reduces the number of bacteria and icky bits that end up in your milk.

There is a Mountain Springs Dairy in Marshall, Arkansas where we get our milk now. It isn't homogenized, and it comes in half gallon glass milk jugs. It tastes sooo good! If I drink the whole milk that comes in plastic at the grocery store, it makes my stomach nautious, but it if I drink the whole milk from that dairy, it doesn't. That tells me something. There are alot of grocery stores selling it around here, in Flippin, Mtn. Home, Mtn. View, Harrison, ect.
There is someone down the road from me who sells raw goat milk off her farm. I am going to check that out. I have never tasted raw goat milk, only the stuff from the can that tastes like goat hair (how can anyone drink that stuff?). I'm hoping this stuff is good.
I see some people talking about raw milk. What are the supposed risks of raw milk-goat or cow, other than those caused by poor sanitation? They must be prevalant and dreadful to feel the need to make it illegal (well, goat milk isn't if picked up at the farm). Of course things like Vioxx are great and necessary for the general public!

Once or twice upon a time have drunk it warm right from the cow before it hits the bucket-- hey, farmkids will do nearly anything, esp. when there's no cats within squirtin' distance. (Who says there no entertainment out on the farm?)
As an adult it's varied from 2% to Silk Milk. Not much of either lately, though sometimes give into craving for milk moustache...
Actually heard somewhere years ago that milk was overrated for the human adult... But that's not what the milk industry wants us to hear. Still beats the heck out of majority of cr-p most Americans want to drink: beer, Coke, Kool-Aid, 'nuther beer....

milk
We have saanens and I think there milk taste just about the same as whole cows milk. The best goat milk I have ever tasted . The one that is fresh now gives enough for her two kids and almost a gallon a day besides that. With what I can sale the kids for and the extra milk my milk is not only free I make money to help pay for other farm exspenses .
