Vandalism is vandalism and I would at least report it. Maybe you're not the only person it has happened to recently and there might be a way to track the folks doing it.

The cow panels are a great idea to fix the fence quickly!

Hope you catch the yahoos!

Whoppss,,, Already did that. Oh, well.
Though there is no way to attach anything to the outside of the mail boxes around here,, to much left over St. Helens dust.

When I lived at my other Farm, had mail stolen right out of the mail box. You know what kind of responce I had from the Sheriff,, "Oh well, nothing we can do about it." Lots of help that was.

May I ask, I don't understand one thing? If I read it right, there are wires cut in 4 places? And it will take you 6 weeks to fix that? I must not have a grasp on the amount of damage done. That should all be spliced up in 2-3 hours, not weeks?

Don't mean to sound odd, just trying to get a better handle on the deal here.

Sorry Paul,, ya, it was a little more than that over all. The way they did it, is going to make it harder to splice together.

DH is going to have to fix the fence,, 6 weeks of weekends. Not that, that makes any sense... he is having to work long hours, so he only has the weekends to try to do things. He is still working on some fencing around the house,, is about 1 acre. He is about half done.
Will have to pull some very big logs out of the ground with the car (logs have to be moved because thery are in the way of the fence). I hope to get that done this weekend so we can get that part of the fence up.
The next part of the fence that needs to be done, we have to move all the trash someone has dumped on that fence line. That in itself is going to take at least three days.
I can't do the fencing, as I am a gimp. Sadly, I wish I was other wise.
Sigh ~ ~

I have some Hog panels,, but we had to cut them in half. I could Harness Maggie and have her pull them over there,, and see if they will fit. Will have to tie off all the loose barbed wire. Will give it a try.

I did call the Sheriff and let them know. Of course there is nothing they can do about it. Along with people dumping trash on your place, this is the second biggest problem here. They are sending me paperwork in the mail to fill out. She also said to go look for the leavings if I can, so they can call the Fish and Game Department. Will see if I am up to it tomorrow.

Just glad I did not have the steers here already or I would of had them all over the countryside.

if the fence comes down in the same place again, definitely buy a motion sensor digicam they make for tracking deer. Ive seen them as cheap as 100 bucks each.
sounds like a lot but a picture as they say is worth 1000 bucks. lol
what would you pay for nice pics of the perps in the act?

see with pictures you can identify, you can press real charges that stick.

you can also get cheap security cam setups for about 100 bucks, of its not to far, for cables or a remote transmission.

look for TRACKS.
footprints?
4 wheeler tracks?
horse tracks?

you could rig a deadfall trap over the offending section...

rig that to a massive alarm system.... thatl make a mess in someones pants.

I would have called/visited the neighbors to "let them know" that someone did this and ask if they saw anyone suspicsious or anything. If it was the neighbors, then they'll get the hint, or perhaps tell you why they did it (mistaken property lines or something). If it wasn't, they may actually give you a lead on who it was and what they were up too.

Any Alaram we get would have to be battery powered,, that part of the fence is 14 acres away from the house. Do you have any idea of where I can buy one on line?

Foot prints yes, and not ours, I know the families boot size. If I had a Dog to go with me, I would of tracked them to either their house, or tire prints. But I do not want to do that alone.

Jen no mistaken property lines around here,, everyone knows everyone. They knew what they were doing.

We haven't been target practicing the last couple of weeks, maybe we need to start again.
I think today would be a nice day to teach my son to shoot. <Evil grin>

I was enjoying watching the elk,, stupid people.

One doesn't go on other peoples land,, except mine that is...of course , hence the letters. Now if I see someone driving down the road and I happen to be out that way, then I will talk in person.

Decided against getting a dog this year, but I might have to rethink that.
Am looking at the Finnish Bear dogs.

A good dog patrolling your land would probably work well. At the very least he would alert you if there were strangers on the land.

You might want to look into running some electricity back there. You could then have a motion light and an alarm rigged up and even a camera. If they know they are being watched and filmed most people would pick another place to go.

We do plan to put up woven field fence and hot wire back there at some point.

The two,, or should say three problems are, time,, DH's lack of it,, Money, and honest help.
Would be affraid to ask any of the nieghbors around here for help, because I bet, one of them did this.

Wish it was legal to set people traps!

Letters are very impersonal. A visit in person to the neighbors would have been better. It establishes contact, puts a face & person with real contact. Your good neighbors would want to watch out for you a little, while the one who did it may feel they were caught & won't do it again. A letter - tossed in the trash with the rest of the junk mail, might almost look snobby - what are you trying to accuse me of huh.......

Leaving the fence open for 6 weeks will establish that the fence is not used/ needed and you don't really care. Fixing it the next day would show you are watching, you care, you want the fence, and it will always be repaired. You are setting yourself up for this being repeated over & over if it takes 6 weeks to get around to repairing the fence. The folks that cut it have 6 weeks of access through these holes, they will be comfortable with that, & cut the fence again, figuring they have another 6 weeks to use 'their' paths.

If it takes 6 weeks to fix the fence, what will your family do when you have livestock? Fences do go down from the livestock, from trees, from neighbors.... How will you handle that situation?

Again, I do not mean to sound negative, & I don't want to make this sound like it is _your_ fault in any way! But, the problem is there; how you handle it now will affect how long the problem continues.

I know this sounds stupid but I put Gate in between me and my neighbor.Makes it easier for them to get through, saves me fixing Fence. But I'm down there all hunting season so I don't have much problem with them coming through.Plus we have Purple Paint Law here saves on signs.

Ya letters are impersonal, but the best I can do. Just explained what happened, if they see anyone cutting my fence to let me or the Sheriff know. Did not point fingers at all. It is better than nothing.
My husband, if he has time, will go visiting this weekend.

There is a gate, they did not use it. Also found a few beer bottles, so I quite sure they were not using their common sense.

We have always had livestock, and have done fence repair when needed, but we did not have people giving us extra work. When we build fence it is nice and solid, and set up so the animals will not mess with it.

There is noting we can do about a pair of wire cutters and people.

My property is posted no Hunting for a reason. One, there are children in the woods playing at times and I have miniature horses. I do not need a yahoo to fire off a shot and say opps,, sorry I killed your son or horse.
There is plenty of open land around here for them to hunt, where there is no fencing.

Big Rockpile, how can I find out if there is a purple paint law here?

Ah Heck, will go pray some purple paint on everything, next time I go down there. What can it hurt!

Fence is now fixed in the worse spot,, in a Yankee Redneck kind of way. Used Hog panels, hot wire, and then duck tape to put the No hunting signs back up. IS the ugliest patch work of a fence anyone will ever see..

Won't be able to walk to well for a few days, but it is patched for now. So they will know, we know, they have been on my land. Rotten sods.

Just Glad I had Maggie and her draft harness, would of never gotten the stuff down to that part of the property without her!

Added note: Oh, and the Beer bottles are gone, so now pretty sure it was someone near by.

On the subject of dogs. You can't beat an Akita. Great with kids, hardy in cold weather, loves creeks an swimming, easy to train. And best of all excellent watch dogs. Ours would give his life for me, DW, or DS without even thinking twice. And they scare the heck out of people.

We are planning on fencing our property this year and I am already anticipating this same problem. I have no livestock to keep in but I am tired of all the tire tracks in my fields. It is amazing to me that some people think that any property at any distance from a house belongs to the public. I have one neighbor in particular who thinks he can just drive across anywhere he pleases. He claims to be "crazy" and has "run off" potential buyers of property that adjoins his. I get the feeling that he and I will get the opportunity "to tango" here pretty soon.
