Jen, look online for some of the pet companies that mail out catalogs. I can't remember who I purchased from in the past..........was it Foster and ?? anyway, I've found the black Kongs are much less expensive through the catalogs than from the store. Seems like they were $6 for the med., vs $10 at the pet store for the same exact item.

I HATE a whining dog. I'm ready to strangle her. She whines all night -- I can't sleep. If I put the crate outside, the neighbors would complain. Sedation doesn't work anymore, it just makes her whine off key.

Three more weeks ... *hysterical laughter* ... three more weeks of this!

My good friend in Vegas has a Black and Tan Coonhound who injured her back while hunting. Well you know what goes on after that! Crating a Black and Tan for eight weeks after back surgery??!! My friend was smart though. Instead of suffering through the whole thing, feeling guilty for yelling at the dog, loosing sleep etc. , she took the dog into a good kennel and boarded her until she could come home and go for walks and play again.

She said that it saved her enough in lost sleep and guilt that it was worth it! LOL

Nylabone has a line of "big chews for big dogs". I have a wolfhound cross and a boxer that are both incredibly agressive chewers. They can destroy almost any dog toy within a few minutes, sometimes it seems like seconds! I had complained to the nylabone company about one of their other products, and they sent me three of the "big chews" to try. That was probably 6 months ago, and those things are still holding up! They are really amazingly durable and I can recommend them highly. (They are pretty big, but my 45 lb. boxer does fine with them.) http://www.nylabone.com/newproducts/bigchews.html

Galileo Bones

Buster the Wonder Dog has destroyed an incredible amount of chew toys. Those massive jaws on that block head are impressive!

We have had success with the black Kong (yeah, he's put a couple of marks in it over the years, but it's still holding up) and the Galileo bone. I don't know who markets the Galileo, but he has yet to make a dent in it! It's hard as a diamond (and painful to step on) but it's only about 5" x 3" x 2" and he loves it.

Best wishes for all the dogs who find themselves confined -- and their owners who are trying to help them!

Pony!

I just got back from the city with several goodies for my Buster to try out. He now has a black kong, the big nylabone, a galileo bone, and several cheap stuffed things to happily destroy (after I take the squeakers out). I found Smith & Foster (or is it the other way around?) online, so I'll order more of the toys that survive longer than 1 day.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

I usually order chew toys and supplies from www.valleyvet.com . They have very good prices, they give discounts for buying quantity and on many items they don't add a shipping charge.

Personally, we give the dogs tough toys, but ones that have some give and can eventually be destroyed. When our border collie mix was a pup she destroyed every chew toy we gave her. Finally we found the gallileo which is hard as a rock and she couldn't destroy it. Great? Not! We moved and she went through a period of being very anxious. She had gotten so used to chewing this indestructible bone that she started chewing on other indestructible objects, including hammers with plastic grips and metal clamps
that had been dipped in plastic. She ended up breaking off 2 large molars down to the tooth's nerve. Our vet explained that those 2 teeth shouldn't be pulled because they are very important to the jaw. Our vet and we are closely watching those teeth because if they become infected they will require a root canal. Our pup, now grown up, doesn't chew anything now except the occasional Greenie.

good luck!
