IF it is heat youwant , check the farm stores, they have the fireplace inserts half off, and get the blower to it, then you will have heat, as long as you can have wood. and throw your potato peelings in a fire, a hot fire with potato peelings help cut done on the creoslove, really does. but as long as you are doing it, might as well make it worth your while, and get heat. you will be amazed at the amount of heat you will get from it. Plus, you can always cook on it, if the power goes out. it would be well worth your money, if you go no , twards the end of the month or two , you might get one for around 100, $ or lsee, just shop around.

Daybird...a fireplace screen or the mesh screen already on the fireplace will help keep coals from popping out into the floor. I hate the mesh screen on our fireplace which is one reason we bought the screen. The screen is working great. My hearth is only two feet wide and I don't have anything to protect the floor...that's what the screen is for.

Ok, Maybe I am stupid.

What exactly is a fireplace insert? How does it heat better than a fireplace without an insert? How can you cook on one?

I'm intrigued.
