If they can't then it would be irresponsible to plan to do so. The young person should either increase sikills to get better paying jobs or else not marry and raise a family.

Is an employer responsible for the family wishes of an employee?

A lot of times, those businesses charge high prices because they believe they have a captive trade. The only thing being destroyed is their stranglehold on the local economy.

Example: Our local hardware store/lumber yard had very little competition (their closest competitor was nearly 30 miles away) until recently.
Their attitude ... "You want a drill? All we carry are contractor's grade tools. Buy it from us or drive 30 miles." That's right - you couldn't even buy a homeowner's grade drill, typically costing about $40, without having to travel. So when Home Depot opened nearby, it was simply amazing how fast the prices dropped at the local store - nearly $1 per 2x4!

The same thing happens when Wal-Mart comes to town. It's called competition ... either adapt or perish. Period. That's one of the main rules of business.
The important thing to remember is that stores like Sears, K-Mart, etc have all had their "day in the sun" - just as Wal-Mart is having now. Sooner or later, their turn to be knocked off the top of the heap will come.

How many of you can remember shopping at now non-existant major chain stores?

Wal-Mart Cometh...

[/FONT][FONT=Comic Sans MS] I have been reading with interest all the posts about Wally World, and I just couldn't resist sticking in my 2-cents worth---especially since I live in the middle of Wally World U.S.A (1/2 mile from the home office) and am a former employee!...I don't know about "pillars of society", but I do know that W-M is putting smaller business owners out of business every day in this country because they are unable to compete...and the reason they can't compete is due to W-M's strongarm tactics in forcing the vendors/suppliers out of business unless they bow to W-M's will and accept the price W-M offers for their product. W-M basically threatens to squash them otherwise by importing from China, where items are produced so rediculously cheap, that U.S. producers can never hope to compete...so their only option to stay in business under the shadow of the world's largest retail giant is to either accept W-M's price and have their own profits take a beating (but remain in business enslaved to W-M for survival), or refuse W-M's price for their product and suffer the consequences of dying a slow, painful death---painful not only for the business owner, but for the employees out of jobs...which can affect the general economic health of entire communities. Thompson Electronics and Rubbermaid are only two prime examples of companies & small towns being killed by The Big "W"...and to add insult to injury, W-M often moves into these dead/dying towns under the Good Samaritan guise of bringing 100's of new jobs with the opening of a new Supercenter--What a joke!!...Oh, they bring jobs alright, but the wages are MUCH lower than the jobs these people lost in the first place, and their former standard of living is gone. Many of these people then are forced to move on to other places in search of better opportunities, feeding the general demise of these once-thriving communities...Remember when Wal-Mart used to have a slogan that proudly proclaimed "Made in the U.S.A."???...Seems like eons ago, doesn't it? They may as well move the Home Office to China, since they've already done their best to kick the American labor force in the teeth...Many of us here in NW Arkansas, current and former employees alike, share the following concensus: Old Sam Walton would be turning in his grave if he knew how his successors were running HIS company...this is NOT what he would have wanted!!

Some of those "pillars of society" have committed insurance fraud, medicare fraud, plain theft (accepted cash for goods they didn't deliver), haven't paid up their workman's comp insurance, don't donate to any local causes and strongarm those they can by blocking competition any way they know how. Same stuff big businesses do but on a smaller scale. Larger or smaller-neither one holds the moral high card.

The best business is the one you own and run.

Here we have a falling birth rate. This has been attributed in part to lack of job security and lack of financial security, even when both partners are working. I don't know about American minimum wages, but surely a minimum wage should be a living wage, something on which people can at least live, rather than just barely scrap by. And that is an employer's responsibility.

Like I said on a previous post. If you shop at Wally-world. You are financing China's war machine. In case you have forgotten, they are a communist government bent on the destruction of a free world. So when our boys go off to war to defend Taiwan. Know how we got to that point.
