It is black, so replacing the belt and other bits and pieces is difficult. The attachments would never stay in their slots, and need to be carried in pockets. It is held together with duct tape, since bits and peices have broken off, screws lost, etc. Would not get another one.
Consumers Reports recommends the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870 as their Best Buy out of 34 tested. Might pay to check out what they have to say.
S-I-L has an Oreck and swears by it. CR states it is light weight, but does not clean as well as one would hope for $400.
Would love to be able to take a machine home for a trial before buying it.

You CAN take the Oreck home and try it for 30 days. If you don't like it...bring it back.

Thanks for all your replies guys! I have written the recommendations down, and will do a bit more research on them. Ma Kettle, thanks for the Consumer reports recommendation.
I have a Hoover now, and thought it is only about 8 years old, mine has several broken pieces of plastic also. I have been using it with one wheel missing for about a year now, and I am sure that cuts down greatly on the efficiency! lol The attachment hose will not stay where it is suppose to, and it goes through a lot of belts. This is the hardest one I have ever had to change belts on--you new several tools, a lot of muscle, and a sailors vocabulary.
Thanks!

For those of you looking for a Dyson Purple, you can buy them brand new, no bidding, for $399. At least you could a month ago.

We have a Rainbow that we bought in 1997. Love it, have had no problems. My mom bought one at the same time and hers is also great.
If I where to buy a new vac I'd buy a Dyson only because it cheeper than a Rainbow and I have heard really good things about them.
I think you get what you pay for, so I'd spend good money for a good vac.

Are any of these vacums QUIET? I bought my wife a Hoover and I can't wait for it to break so I can throw it out. It sounds like a hog chewing gravel! I never thought you should have to wear hearing protection to vacum. I was at a hotel the other day and the maid came in to clean, the racket from the vacum was amazing.

Hubby talked me into a Dyson about 6 months ago and I LOVE it!! With one full-time dog (ours) and one part-time dog (DS#1's) in the house I vacuum every other day. I can't believe how much dog hair that thing picks up!!
It is much quieter than my Hoover and about half the weight. For someone like me who has had one back surgery and two shoulder surgeries I appreciate the fact that it is so light.
I have the "Animal" purple one. And we paid $423 at Sears when it was on sale.

the only "quiet" vac is a cental vac with the can and motor in the basement...
the eureka has a HUGE claer can... isnt it freaky how much crap you pick upmin 5 min? makes ya feel fithy think ing about how=much DIRT was in the carpet.
dog hair... I keep a large tank shop vack with a bag in it (filter canisters suck... use the big bags) and I have to pre sweep the house for dog hair where it collects. then run the sweeper with the beater bar and the "look how filthy you are" clear tank.

I bought a used kirby for $10 in need of repairs at a swap meet, but that's unusual -- used ones in good shape run around $400-500. (New, they run as much as two grand with all the bells and whistles.) The newer ones are self propelled, the older ones are heavy and not self propelled, which is the primary drawback. But they are built like tanks -- solid metal, built to last and last and last.
I kill vaccuums with alarming regularity. The kirby, once fixed, has run two years without a problem except for the generic brush roller it came with gave up. GOt a new name-brand brush roller for $20 and it looks like it will last a good while.
The nice thing about Kirbys is the parts are readily available and they're easy to fix if they break.

"I used to sell and repair Vacuums, you can not go wrong with a Panasonic upright. Get the cheapest one you can find that has a metal base plate. Hepa is a load of pucky, just get normal bags and vacuum often."
thank you, punk rock, for recommendation. right now i a m cussing over 2 dirt devils, which would rather grind themselves into shavings than apply the torque to the brush. its the shortest carpet pile in the world too- almost tile.......
wish i had exp with kirby, almost but they didnt hire me. too bad as they are ALWAYS advertising for people...........(ps- still waiting on your call kirby!)
if money comes- what range am i looking at for a metal plate model> my expericene mostly with hoover and sears kenmore, the kenmore being a favorite, if only for the ease of breaking it down underneath and fixing, and a reasonable easy belt. it was running with a duct taped rubber bumper and a wrapped wire homemade bracket for the longest time before the motor finally burnt out- that is where my skills end.
had a 'regina' from the junk- tried to redo it- plastic fittings made to break- what a piece of garbage that was
