Here's a hint--I had a JC Penney card 20 years ago. About 6 years ago, even though I hadn't used it in 20 years, it still shows up on my credit papers. Even though I closed the account oh, those many years ago. I called and asked them to remove it from my credit history. It did show up as a credit transaction/change, but it is now gone. Finally. I hate JC Penney and Sears and all those department store credit gimmicks.

Try a Visa Buxx card. It is a credit card but only up to the cash limit you deposit in it. Not tied to a bank account at all. So you can really base your life on cash by buying a card with whatever limit you want. And then you'll have it for ease in on-line ordering or whatever it is you want a credit card for. Say you want to limit vacation spending to $100, then only deposit that much.

All credit card offers and magazine subscruptions for that matter, get placed in my burn pile.

Consider cancelling a credit card that won't lower your limit. Thats nuts. Or maybe you want to lower it below what you owe--they won't do that. I helped an 89 yo friend lower her limit, which had risen every year and was then $40 K, to $5 K. It can be done. I didn't want her ever taken advantage of by anyone and she was concerned. I also registered to get her off the phone lists and mailing lists and she saves any confusing mail for me to go over with her. She's intelligent but those $5 checks that sign you up for stuff throw her.

There was a story years ago that prisons were being recruited as call centers. I don't think it was for actual credit card companies, but for phone order type of stuff.

Nice. Call up to order something and you are giving all your personal info to a freakin prisoner who's probably in prison for committing fraud!

I don't know if they still do this.
