Here in Ste. Genvieve County Missouri at the vets office it is $45.00 for a male and $50.00 for a female.

Low cost spay/neuter
If I remember correctly January is Spay/Nueter month and there are several different organizations around the country offering reduced prices.... check out these web sites to see if their is a program in your area.

Looks like the Humane Society is sponsering a lot of these clinice - you might want to check with your local one. Sometimes County animal shelters are invovled too.

"No More Homeless Pets" Can Help :)
Do check with your local Humane Society...or check on-line for the No More Homeless Pets Organization in your area. That organization just concluded a series of spay clinics here in Kansas City. The Humane Society provides their facility, local vets volunteer their time. Over the course of the last 2 months...my parents had their 24 barn cats spayed/nutered for $15 each. The shots, worming, ear mite & flea treatments were all paid for by a donor to the organization. It's really worth you time to do some research. Call one of the ads in your local newspaper that advertises "rescued cats & kittens" they will know who to contact.

Thanks for the info and links...I'm off to make a few phone calls to Humane Societies in the area (we don't have one in our county).

I think in our area you can get a male neutered for $25 and a female spayed for $35.

golden mom is right- the vet office has an over head that is the costof the rental, the employees, running costs, etc.
dont forget that the vet paid bigg $$ in education alone to be able to become a vet int eh first place. they have tno obligation to provide low cost service to us.
"Yeah, no wonder there are so many cats running around, hardly anyone in this county could afford to have them fixed!"
yeah that leaves that problem. cats have a tight sac and would be a difficutl fix- but someone says they do it with the green elastrator bands.whether or not this was 'safe'i dont know- and dont care- they were those annoying strays. and you know, all farms hve chronic problems of big fat mean toms hanging around, too big to hunt mice and mean enogh to beat up your barn cats that do.
i left one barn cat unfixed- that was a manx tom that was excellent barn cat- he cought rats. he had some kittens and i tried to buy one, ( i lost him) he was so good. really good barn cats are rare most are just fat cat chow suckers that cant hunt.
i still like the I.U.D. for females idea but i never seen it mentioned, i wonder if it would help even a % of the time. there is discussion of a shot of a hormonelaced stuff that will couse females to become infertile at least 'for a while', it was promoted by FAO i think for fertility control in underdeveloped countries in the 80's but there was extreme resistance in the religious sector- too bad that it is not availabel for animal use. there is just such a big problem of strays that is not taken care of by vets( they cant) and by the local shelter system, which is rather overrun.

Thanks inc! Most people think that vets should do work for next to nothing because "vets love animals so much" or because "it's just one cat/dog/etc". Well I love animals as much as the next person (I am owned by 2 goldens, four house cats, and several "outside" critters), but I have a morgage just like everyone else and I have to pay $440 EVERY MONTH for the next 8 years (2 years done!!!) for my school loans. I'm one of the lucky ones-my loan was for only about half of what my classmates averaged. I know most people think that vets make lots of money, but I can tell you that's not usually the case. I make no more money than lots of people who have four year degrees and I had to go to school for 7 years (most people in my class went 8 or more years).
And it's never "just one"! I can't tell you how many times per week (and sometimes a day!) we hear that. I never ask my clients to do more than I do for my own animals. Both of my dogs have had to visit the local vet college for issues and they give discounts to NO ONE (not even current students). I have my barn kitties spayed/neutered and vaccinated. I actually have to pay more than some of the prices quoted here for my own cat that I do surgery on!

My "country" vet charges $55 for males, $45 for females including overnight boarding, flat rate. He had to give my last female the anesthetic shot 3 times, she was so hyper and resistant - no extra charge.

$25/$15 if the cat is pregnant or in heat $10 more. If you sign a waiver no pre-op blood work is required and if you pay more they will give your kittie a pain killer. I'm happy with our clinic.
The humane society charges more. $60.00 unless you can demonstrate you are poor (not sure how) then it is a sliding scale.
There are plenty of vets who charge more up to $200 in the same area.

There's a local vet called the Cirlce of Life that runs a special occasionally five cents for any male cat. I always throw a few bucks into the pot to help them out when ever I can. I can't remeber how much they charge for females I think it's $25.00 they're really good folks trying to help out.

Apparantly alot by all the stray\feral cats around here but if they get caught near the hens or my pigeons there is usually little need for a vet...

if you are anywhere near Makinen, MN (between Duluth and Virginia) -- check out www.contentedcritters.org. They have a low cost spay and neuter program (I think it's called S.N.A.P.) and there's a link to an application on the web site.

I've never done it, but my father who was raised on a farm where castrating animals was just part of the job farmers did said they ''fixed'' all their tomcats by one person holding their hindlegs and dropping them into a rubber boot, and the other doing the deed.Sounds brutal but I'm not sure if that's so diferent or traumatic than castrating any other farm animal.I took my cats[females] to the vet.I do agree though thatour biggest problem in the country is city people dumping their unwanted cats and dogs out here.Makes me really mad.

"dropping them into a rubber boot"
that would be essential- cant imagine holding onto a tom cat! rreeeaoooow!
again with the green bands. too bad you cant use them to do females- theyre the ones that have all the kittens!
wonder if you could insert a green band and have it function like an Intra Uterine Device?
( i havent been able to find out much on the topic, concerning animals)
i wonder if IUDs have been ever used in horses- thery about as big as camels. maybe that woul dbe acceptable 'mustang control' for the animal rights orgs. i heard thier solution for the over population of the deer- they wanted all the females to be injected with a hormone implant that would fake a pregnancy. i shudder if this is the same drug as 'depo-provera'. what a miserable painful drug- wouldnt wish that on ANY animal.

" cant imagine holding onto a tom cat! rreeeaoooow!"
Actually its not all that bad. I have held a number of toms while they where tied up in a gunny sack. There was one though that bit throught the sack and leather gloves. Dad did those with a pocket knife.
With the bands I do it myself as dh is chicken. Wrap up in a really thick bath mat and put the band over you know what. Cats dont seem to feel pain from that method.
Kinda like the rubber boot idea.
