I've used a wire brush attachment on a hand drill followed by a soap scouring pad with good results on some cast iron that was in my house when it burned.
It had been in the ashes a good while in wet weather before I found it and only took one "seasoning" to put it right.

I remember watching my mom, after washing the cast iron skillet, would put it on the gas stove, and heat it until dry. So I guess my question, can you use them on the newer glass top electric stoves?

If you have a wood burning stove stick the pan in there for a few hours. Then wash it well and season.

cast iron

I just love my cast iron pans! I've bought them at sales and even had to buy a few new. (I have no idea what brand they are.) But my youngest daughter and I have a problem with being anemic and I the Dr's told me to cook with cast iron! CAN YOU BELIEVE A DR. TOLD ME TO COOK WITH CAST IRON!? Now that I use cast iron daily we haven't had to take iron pills every day! Thanks God there is cast iron! Erica, Mich.

Cast Iron is by far the best cooking material ever!. Good advice- Your pans should be like a black mirror: If you can't see your clear reflection, they need to be seasoned. Hot water and a rag are the only things beside food that ever ouch my pans.

I inherited some of mine from my parents, who got them from my mother's family, so by the time my girls get them they will have gone through several generations. I love to throw them in the oven for roasting chicken, etc. It seems to renew the season on them, too. I don't think you can make good corn bread without cast iron! I set them on the (electric) burner to dry after washing. I don't have to lift weights...those pots are hefty!

Visiting my family during the holidays, I ran into a friend of mine from 36 years ago. One of the things we both remembered was when we bought our cast iron skillets and seasoned them! We both still have them. I have been through two marriages (and so has she) but NO ONE is taking my cast iron!!

The only thing IMO Cristco is good for is seasoning cast iron and it does a mighty fine job of it.

We have a number of pieces. I wish my mom would have let me get all of hers but she let them go with the property. :waa:

We use cast iron most everyday.

Doing a google search will bring up loads of info on seasoning cast iron.
