A letter from a real live AK backwoods homesteader!

Hello Green Alien~ Your friend is practically a neighbor of mine! I live probably 20 miles from her by snowmachine. I think she is smart to get at least a cell phone.

My home is at least accessable by truck, but 2 weeks ago, it broke down 9 miles from the house. Of course it was dark (it gets dark here now about 3:30pm), and quite cold. My daughter and I would have really been in a bind if not for our cell phone. It is NOT just a matter of convenience in this area. It can save your life! We learn to depend on our neighbors, and help each other out.

She certainly has more gumption than most would give her credit for. It can be a very hard life (especially for a single gal without good health), and I hope she is fully prepared for what she dove into. I say.....More Power to her! She, at 53, is following her dreams and is a true inspiration!

Personally, my dream is to LEAVE Alaska! I have lived all of my 34 years here, and am ready for a change and a new challenge ~perhaps mid west area??

My sister has MS and thankfully it is in remission and she is doing well as she has 3 small boys.

I had a neighbor with MS who slowly forgot things and it progressed, ultimately causing her death. If I was diagnosed with such an illness I would definately do whatever I wanted to (such as fullfill a dream). I think it is a shame we wait to find the courage until something like an illness or loss enables us.
