BTW, you ever watch gunsmoke (your name)?
I've done that before. I cut out all carbonated and even caffeinated beverages for over a year. Almost two years actually. I noticed zero effect on my health or how I felt. I go in phases with beverages. I am on Diet Coke now but a few months ago I drank iced tea. I got on a Diet 7up and Diet Sprite kick a few months before that. Besides, I drive way too fast to worry about my Diet Coke consumption.

I don't watch Gunsmoke much anymore. I think I've seen them all though. I've got an autographed picture of Doc and Festus around here somewhere. Nope, Quint is just a web alias originating from an incident with some associates of mine. Plus I just like the name.

WAAAH! :waa: :waa: Do you KNOW what I would do for a peice of venison sausage? DH doesn't hunt... and the deer out here aren't anything like we got back east, anyhow. Man... my brothers had better have some ready when I come home for Christmas!

The last thing I ate was a chocolate oatmeal cookie that I just made. Right before that it was turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans.

Right now I'm going to go back and have another cookie!

Drooling here! Ed, if you make the gravy yourself would you mind sharing the recipe? Thanks!

Liver, bacon, onions, and mashed potatoes with drippings. And beer. I have some Brussel sprouts and beets, but neither sounded good with liver. What veg goes well with liver besides onions??

Thumbs up

My DH started this thread and we have really enjoyed reading your replies. We've found it to be very informative. He knew what homesteaders ate would be remarkably different from the general population.

For my breakfast this morning I had 2 cups of coffee sweetened with a little Splenda (wished it could've been honey from our bees, but the farmer in the adjacent field sprayed something that killed off all our bees--but that's a whole nother story). I also had a bowl of Quaker Oats sweetened with brown sugar. Finally, I had a slice of homemade Boston brown bread that we baked in widemouth pint jars, decorated and gave out as Christmas presents.

I noticed that some of you mentioned having "thick rolled oats". Is that something different from a product like standard Quaker Oats? If so, please enlighten me.

I made gingerbread as gifts that way one year. You can use any cake or quick bread recipe (like banana bread or soemthing), but make sure you grease the jars well (with butter or shortening, NOT spray) before pouring the batter in. Fill the jars 3/4 of the way full before baking them ( to leave room for rising), and make sure there is a lot of space between the jars as they bake. Put the caps on right when they get out of the oven, and the jars will seal themselves as they cool... I think they'll keep a good 6 months or so. When serving, just run a table knife around the edge of the jar and the bread should slowly slide out.

Super yummy...got lots of compliments.

Oh man....I really pigged out today. My grand daughter is home from school and I fixed homemade chicken noodle soup for her. I had a small bowl of that, then a small bowl of homemade tomato basil soup with oster crackers, and then a half toasted wheat bread with homemade pimento cheese sandwich with an inch thick of leaf lettuce.

My oldest grand daughter came over to borrow gingerbread men cookie cutters while we were eating. We started looking at rescipes and it put me in the mood to start making my Christmas cookies. I use a shortbread dough for my cookies and ice them with cream cheese and powdered sugar icing...delish. She better bring me some of her gingerbread!

I also have steel cut oats with brown sugar and cinnamon for breakfast.

For breakfast, homemade yeast wholewheat pancakes with butter & syrup. Then I blended my frozen strawberries with frozen strawberry yogurt and milk for smoothies with the pancakes

food

Hmm--time has passed since this was posted. It is now evening here, and I just had a cup of decaf and 5-6 peanut M & M's. For supper we had slow cooked beef roast with a salad (low fat dressing) and home grown basement stored butternut squash dressed with some sort of no trans fat liquid oleo.

Yea, it's when you get old those things catch up with you. A cumulative effect.

From Gunsmoke, I think Chester is my favorite Character. Our cat is named after him, kind of. Chester Good was on Gunsmoke, our cat is Chester Bad.

Unfortunately, Holiday Cookie Flavored Peeps. They really good in that gooey, sickening sweet kind of way.
