Can you name something that is not taxed?
I can only think of a couple of things. Here in Oklahoma you don't have to pay taxes on a service, such as if you have someone to work on your car you don't have to pay taxes on the labor. But you do on any new parts they install. When I had my little deer processing business I didn't have to charge any tax on the processing service. They paid a flat rate quoted. But I had to pay taxes on the money I earned.
I don't have to pay taxes on any game animal or fish I harvest which makes cheaper eating. But, I have to pay taxes on any weapon or ammo I purchase. Unless I make my own stick bow and wooden arrows or noodle by hand. (yikes, snapping turtle!) |
Depends I supposed by what you mean by taxed, directly or indirectly?
|
In TX (at least in the grocery store) you don't pay taxes on food
items that have to be prepared...milk,bread,cake mix, soup, etc. Cokes, ice cream, and candy are taxable. |
Ky has no sales tax on food. But i live in TN where they get you comeing, going, and eating. :(

I really can't complain because our property taxes are so low, but I hate the "hidden" taxes, like having to purchase a dog tag from the county. Why can't they just come out and say "We are going to tax you for this" not call it a fee? This is a pet peeve of mine. Basically everything in WV is taxed, they only thing I can think that isn't is my cats and chickens.

Here in west TN they tax everything except air and lottery tickets!

internet purchases in some states
I bought a tractor for $4k, saved half of the cost to ship it hunted local for quite awhile |
We don't pay taxes on food or clothing (except any clothing used for a sport) and some non-food items like soap powder, windex and floor cleaners.

In today's society EVERYTHING is taxed one way or another. Take clothes for instance. Let's buy a snazzy new shirt. (It probably is made in China, India or Pakistan but for the sake of discussion let's suppose it is made in the US)
You buy a shirt which the government in their benevolence has decreed to be free of taxation for "working families". The folks that make the raw materials for the cloth and thread pass their taxes along to the fabric and thread manufacturer. The folks that make the fabric and thread pass on their taxes to the shirt manufacturer. The shirt manufacturer has to pay taxes and they get passed along to the wholesaler. The wholesaler passes his taxes along to the retailer. The retailer passes his taxes on to you. The shirt is hardly tax free when you buy it. You are paying a tax one way or another. I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that isn't taxed one way or another these days. As a side note, if it were up to me I would repeal the 16th amendment to the constitution. And abolish the federal reserve system, abolish dual citizenship and a bunch of other things that would be sure to get me shot. |
I hate to remind people of this, but there is a tax for hunting and fishing on public lands, unless the license is free in your state. I know in Virginia, everybody has to pay $12.00 each for the basic license, deer/bear/turkey license, Muzzleloader license and bow license. That is if you are a state resident. If you are out of state, it costs $80.00 for the basic license, $60.00 for deer/bear/turkey, and $25.00 each for bow and muzzleloader. Fishing licenses are $12.00 each, plus an additional $12.00 for fishing in stocked waters for VA residents. Out of state, it's $30.00 each. Now, if you are hunting or fishing on your own property, you don't need a license
As for what is tax free free, there is the water out of my well, the food out of my garden, and the air that I breathe. I even have to pay a library tax, since my county library isn't worth a going to, and the nearest decent library charges for out of town residents. |
Quote:
They've made noises about taxing the water out of wells here! The air was taxed in Denver when I was there - for clean air "initiatives". And the land you grow the food on is taxed, the seeds are taxed. |
So far Daydreaming isn't taxed! though it is taxing on the brain.
|
here in michigan, you pay taves on just about everything, and then you pay again. this state is tax crazy. so directly or indirectly, you pay taxes on everything. and some things you pay a double and triple tax, like cigerettes and gas. really high taxes on those to things. most things in this state are taxed to the max.

Our house
When we sell our house in BC, 100% of the capital gain is tax free.
However, in BC and Canada the mortgage interest is NOT deductible when you pay it each year, no matter what you make. Well there are ways to get tricky and make it deductible. But that will only work if, if, if ... Alex |
Yes, I can name something that is not taxed: My husband's pension. He is a Seattle firefighter who retired on disability, and his pension is exempt from any taxes--state or federal (well, WA does not have state income tax).

Most of those exceptions will be gone if the nutcases in DC go through with this plan to replace income tax with a national sales tax on everything. Their math that gets them to the 23% rate includes taxes on otherwise free veterans health care, church services, groceries and literally everything else that you ever buy.
They will also be applying the sales tax to purchases that the government makes, which accounts for about 1/3 of all the projected revenue. I'm still trying to figure out how that isn't a shell game... If you sort out those types of items and made them exempt then the rate would go up to about 60%. Still applying to housing, clothing, gas, electricity, health care and the other basic necessities of life. I'm pretty sure that a great many (if not most) of the people on this board, as homesteaders and DIYers are making little enough income that they aren't even paying federal income tax. Get ready to fork over half of your income if this plan goes into effect. Good luck with not becoming homeless. |
I would much rather go back to the way things were before the income tax. That's right. We got along just fine for years and years without the government confiscating income. The current tax system is just wrong an so many levels. Nobody, millionaire or not, should have 30-60% or even more of their money confiscated by the federal and state governments. There is something desperately wrong when the government can lay claim to your paycheck or even more reprehensible - your estate when you're dead. What could be more foul than after your death the federal government lining up (first in line mind you) with their hand out like they were an heir. Despicable.
We got along for years without an income tax. Go back to tariffs and excise taxes. Not enough income to support the bloated federal government? Awwww. Too bad. The main problem with a sales tax is that it will be WAAAAAY too high. It should be no more than 10% and 3-5% would be more palatable. Even worse would be congress enacting such a system without repealing the 16th amendment and also abolishing all federal withholding. ALL OF IT. No social security shell games. All of it. Unfortunately that would require the feds admitting the SS system is a mismanaged ponzi scheme that if run by a private company would result in prison terms for those running it. |
in pa as far as In know there is no tax on;

I guess I live in the wrong state because we pay high taxes on everything, time and again. Our property taxes and personal property taxes (cars, etc.) have jumped so badly in the past 5 years that it's rediculous. Just the taxes on owning a nice car would make you change your mind. How can they tax you every year for owning something? How many times do you have to pay taxes on the same vehicle? But it's something like 7% of it's value every year. Of course our local school board has gone crazy with building fancy buildings (not decent education, but nice buildings). They even put in a half-million dollar artifical turf on the high school football field! I kid you not! Of course, they stupidly forgot parking so you have to walk to the fancy stadium. :) Crazy! And what the smazz is all this interest in high school plays? We built a $3 million Performing Arts Theater building (still no parking), but then every small town in Missouri seems to have done the same thing. What's that about? What was wrong with the high school gym? Are all the kids going to be Movie Stars or something??? (Sorry, excuse my rant.)

My bait worms are non taxable in my state as an agricultural product provided that I as the farmer, do the selling.
|
Air...unless you buy it in one of those little aerosol cans to blow the dust out of your computer. Then you pay sales tax. Not much left is there?
|
In Missouri garage/yard sale purchases are not taxed as far as I know. I just hate taxes in any way, shape or form. Honestly, income taxes are bad, but if you swap that out for a 23% federal tax, that is even worse. That would make a total of 31.225% tax on items where I live when you combine the 7.225% tax rate for the state, county and local tax rates.
The more taxes we pay, the less we actually buy. This also encourages secondary and underground markets along with higher tax evasion rates. |
Taxes themselves are taxed. For example when you buy a tire you pay a federal excise tax (used to be about 2 dollars). Then you pay sales tax on the price of the tire and on the federal tax.
Take a look at you phone bill. I suspect that you have several calculations of taxes and fees added to the total which itself is taxed. |
Homebrew beer!
I don't pay taxes on the yeast, hops or malted barley as they are all food products in Texas! Ah, tax free beer! |
We used to play a game in my History classes when I was still teaching. I would ask the students to name an item that wasn't taxed: directly or indirectly. Not once did the students or their parents come up with something that wasn't taxed; from clean air and water, to the "free" firewood they cut on national forest land.
What is worse is that even the minds of people are shaped by the news media and public education so that even the thoughts we think are taxed by the government. |

If we can just get rid of the TennCare and Medicare Government does not belong in healthCare I am in favor of "pay as you go for what you use" for example charge tolls to all non-residents and charge residents one time annually for the mileage on vehicle past 12-months my .02 |

I agree, I own a backhoe that I use to do work for friends and such and barter instead of a check.. $50.00 an hour if by check, $35.00 if cash or barter.. This way the "THIEVES" won't get any... I'm tired of the corruption in goverment and the frivalous spending they do, who spends $73,000.00 a year on meals, one of our "goverment agents" did in PA and then tried to justify it.. and the mass public just goes along with it... |
Boy did I have to look long and hard to find an American flag that was made in America. I just had a problem with buying an American flag made in China.

Postage stamps.
|
Aren't postage stamps a tax of their own to move the mail via government?
I agree the government does stupid things with tax dollars, but I cannot say I do not benefit in any way. After all, I use the roads, I have access to 911 service, I got a public school education, I enjoy buying and eating safe food from a local grocery, etc. |
