Hmm ... $2,000 ...
If all the bills were paid, I guess I'd put down more concrete in and around the barn. You can never go wrong with more concrete
Or ... give a bunch to the church for more playground and classroom equipment at church camp.

Gold and silver are commodities and you buy when they are low and sell when they are high. Sorry you father bought when the dollar was rising and interest rates were declining and therefore bought at the high. But, you may get back all that money and then some.
Right now, with the dollar declining and interest rates with no where to go but up, gold and silver are a good buy.

If I was handed $2,000, I would hold it until after the county tax sale next year, in case I needed the extra money to get the two lots across the street. (I really want them, for pasture now, to expand my garden later, and eventually to build a little energy-efficient cottage.) If I was able to purchase the lots without dipping into the $2,000, I'd use some of it to fence the lots. Whatever was left would go into a greenhouse and materials for a small barn.
No jewelry for me, I wear a cheap wristwatch, and have a few pins that we bought at the dollar store just to dress up with, and that is it!

There's a repo singlwide what we're looking at that costs about $2000. I'd probably buy that to live in while we build a small, energy effecient house of some sort.

I have to disagree here. You are talking about ingot. This woman is talking about jewlery. She will never, ever, get back that money unless that is a signed piece of work by a recognized artist... or the world runs out of diamonds. Neither of which is likely.
Jewlery is a Very Bad Investment, as anyone who has inherited Grandmother's baubles will be able to tell you... but as someone who used to work in the industry, I can assure you. Bad investment. The retail price of jewlery is based on a markup of the wholesale, and labor. When you try to sell the piece, you'll get wholesale, no labor... basically you're selling weight, not craft. And as weight... your jewlery is worth next to nothing. Anyone who has walked around a mall and seen the diamonds on display knows in their heart of hearts that when Sears and KMart start selling diamond jewlery the value of the diamond has fallen to next to nothing.
There are some colored stones which have been appreciating in value and might be a worthwhile investment for someone who knows the market and knows what they're buying... but we're talking large stones here: $10,000 minimum. And, again, if you know what you're looking at, signed pieces by recognized artists may also appreciate in value. But again, we're not talking $2000 pieces here. We're talking a wee bit more.
But if someone handed me $2000 it would go into the roof. Ours is leaking and we've got buckets out! Eeek!

$2000? At this point put it towards purchasing my new used vehicle. My wonderful Saturn bit the big one and now I have to purchase a new vehicle and the ones I am looking at cost a bit more than the van my father bought for $500.
Though that money would look nice back in the bank to help pay for the savings we have used to feed our cattle the last couple of winters.....

Well 2,000 wouldn't do much in my overall project. But it would pay for the building license and to cut down the tree we need done. I want to enlarge my kennel by 15 ft. Just pouring the concrete and the block work is going to cost a bit over 4500.oo and then you start the real building!!! LOL But 2,000 added to what I have saved up would almost do it!!!

I'd put the money away until next June, and then I'd buy a garden tractor.

well, our landlord is trying to sell the house and we won't be able to buy it until next year, so i'd save it up until I could buy a different house.

My first thought was, "Pay down the debt."
Which is a good and reasonable thought. The quicker we get that whittled away, the quicker we get to The Homestead.
But DD's engine on her '90 Lumina threw a rod yesterday, so I'd probably use some of the money to help her get a reliable beater (without front wheel drive!) to get her to work through the winter.
If I was being TOTALLY frivolous, I'd drop a diesel engine and trans adapter into my 82 CJ7. I've been thinking about that for awhile... And if it works, we'll put one into Hubby's Scrambler as well.

Well now 2 Grand would just about cover the budget for my building plans in two weeks. 700 for the metal roofing and 450 for the lumber I need. Then 350 for the truck rental gas and driver to get all my stuff from Illinois to Missouri. And 5 days of a carpenter at 100/day is 500. Just two grand. Then I could keep the cash I have now for Miscellaneous expenses, buy the siding instead of waiting until spring, buy two more fireplace units so I can install them now while Im framing and just maybe buy that little Hasty Baker cookstove for the kitchen. Oh yeah and a bag of chips.
Ive always said that if I won the lottery I would just open two open ended charge accounts. One at the lumber yard and one at a bookstore. What bliss it would be to buy lumber anytime I wanted and to go on a bookstore spree once a month or so.

I think it would have to go for home repairs. We need a new roof and there are a few rooms I'd like to paint. I could also finish the dining room floor. If there was any left it would be for Christmas. As nice as the sentiment would be if dh ever spent that kind of money on jewlery I'd have to break the cast iron pan on his head cause he would've lost his mind already!

But then, if you conk him on the coconut with the iron pan, you'll have to take the $2K to pay the emergency room bill -- AND have to buy a new pan!

Good point! The value of jewelry is only what real gold is left after it is melted down and then it is just raw gold and not even coins or bullion that can be certified. Diamonds have never been a good investment.
