On my own property...
...in 1789 the first homesteaders built a log cabin here that stood until 1987.
...before that its said that indians buried some of their own in our back field.
...in 1837 the first Methodist church in our area built a chapel 1/4 mile from here.
...confederate soldiers are reputed to have camped here during the 1860's.
...in the 1950's our property hosted an annual country western music festival, and saw the likes of Patsy Cline and Jimmy Dean sing here.

I don't live near any major homesteading person or place unfortunately, but am about 20 minutes south of Callaway Gardens which is a wonderful spot of natural beauty. And Westville, which is an 1850's village, and really cool, is about 45 minutes away. And Carla Emery is coming here Monday!

Supposedly just west on the wilderness property now was a homestead many years ago. I"m told that by a local business owner. There isn't evidence of any building there, so it must have been a temporary settlement.

We are about 30 miles from the original Cabela's store and catalog center, and I used to live right on the Oregon Trail which is maybe 6 or 7 miles from out house as the crow flies.
This whole area has old homesteads, most falling down now, but most of this country was homesteaded by the families who still live there.
We are about 20 miles from Chimney Rock, also Courthouse and Jailhouse Rock.
I don't know if you've heard of JF Policky, he's a western artist and lives 10 miles from us.

jackie, I wouldn't doubt it.
When I first move in town nearby here, the landlady at the time who's family came from Sasketchwan and set up a business pretty well based on rum running during the U.S. probition. Rumors of distilleries on islands on the big lake close to the border and 'running' the booze at the time. Al Capone stories also from Indian guides that took him fishing. He might have had caches and propety use for bootlegging all around.
Maybe someday you'll find some of that 'cache' hid away. :haha:

I've been there!!! Lovely country, the winding roads, sheep farms and the pints od ale. Cool - wish I was back there for another tour - I had the best time at Windsor Castle and the community. Are they finished working on Canterbury Cathedral - they were re-facing it in 1998. I had a meat pie to die for in Stratford. I looked and looked for a kilt to buy - lol - guess it just wasn't meant to be. Would probably get thrown in jail for showing off my cod piece or something. Have a lovely day - good to see you on here, brought back a lot od memories.

We are about 5 miles from http://www.organicvalley.coop/

I am totally spoiled on Organic Valley milk and cheese, and I can get it right in town for less than at the store.
