The hydro power may be your best bet. Don't know present figures, but several years ago read that micro hydro gives same power at 1/10th cost of solar. I did run the figures for propane generator vs solar and solar came out WAY ahead. So hydro should be even better than that. I didn't really have that choice before, it was either solar or wind or a hybrid. I went totally with solar because I knew I would not be able to do any service work on a tower and I could do all the installation and service on solar by myself.

Moonwolf-thanks for the info on propane lights. I've never used them.

I am most familiar with natural gas, since i have a gas well on my property and am lucky enough to be able to use all I want to for free. So you can imagine that I do and it makes up for a lot. Still, for my less than remote location, staying on the grid works out financially easiest. If I ever go off grid I may leave a great deal of electric behind, but that's for the future and hopefully some really cost-effective options by then.

By the way, BackwoodsHome has a solar energy CD of articles for about $20 I believe. If it isn't them then it is Backwoodspower or similar named magazine.
